Runway App Studio is now live. One of our most exciting and anticipated releases.
We started building this internally for our team to use, and within just a few weeks, it was seeing incredible usage. The only reasonable thing to do was to release it to the world.
I strongly believe that most of the interfaces we use to control models will be specific to each individual. Not many-to-one, but one-to-one. Any form of control you can imagine. Any version of Runway you want.

Every hundred days or so I do an episode with executives I know who have just taken new AI roles. This round so many of the usual truths got flipped upside down. For the latest Skip episode I sat down with Anthony Maggio @maggioant (CPO, Runway), Gadi Ben-Zvi @GadiBenZvi (AI platform and products, Eli Lilly), and Chandra Raghavan @craynium (principal PM, Google Search AI). A ton of great insights:
◆ Join a lab to learn AI? Anthony considered one and found it too similar to a big company. "Both of the labs are now very large companies and in many ways operate like very large companies"
◆ Avoid big tech? Chandra is finding an IC role on Google Search AI is closer to his startup days than the stereotype. "It turns out it is a false dichotomy"
◆ Steer clear of non-tech? Gadi took an AI leadership role at Eli Lilly because he thinks it's the safest and most interesting way to work on AI. "When they make a bet, they are willing to spend years on it"
◆ Builders over managers? The companies that hired builders are now scaling, and executive skills matter again, but only paired with building
◆ Bring a prototype? Everyone has one now. The interviews go past it to what you built yourself and what broke along the way. "The credential doesn't just come from the vocabulary, it comes from doing the work"

If you want to learn more about World Models and where @runwayml is headed, this essay by @packyM & @agermanidis is a great place to get started.
Runway has been on a tear over the past couple months.

Solaris: the world's first Interface World Model
Praxis-1: open-weight World Action Model for robotics
Project Continuum: operating system research application built around real-time interfaces
A video model. An interface model. A robotics model. An operating system. Are you getting it? These are not separate pretrains. They’re different applications, built around the same General World Model backbone, with different post-training on top.
All of them are examples of what you can do when you can simulate any pixel.
So I asked co-CEO Anastasis Germanidis to co-write an essay with me explaining how video, interfaces, operating systems, and robotics all fit together, why video was the right starting point for World Models, where the world is heading if Runway’s bets are right, and whether or not, as someone who simulates worlds, he believes we’re living in a simulation.
Welcome to the future. Enjoy!

Dot is the first proactive personal agent that I’m finding valuable. Within a few days of use my dot has replaced a dozen one-off apps and agents that I’ve built over the past year.
Props to @thsottiaux and the @ChatGPT team on this awesome product.
One of the most satisfying things about building product at @runwayml is the magic of our autonomous cloud agents.
This morning I uncovered some UX friction, tagged an agent in Slack, made a coffee, and came back to a fully deployed solution 🤯
The barriers to practicing magic are dropping every day

We clearly see AI spend pulled in two different directions.
On the downside, new and cheaper models are pushing AI spend down. Jev captured an entire percentage point of market adoption within a month (unheard of growth). And routers continue to gain.
On the upside, the increased adoption of expensive image and video generation models will push AI spend up, like Higgsfield and Runway.
Spend your entire career being converted into pixels and eventually you want to get into the pixel creation game
Ben Affleck reveals he writes Python, understands convolutional neural networks, worked extensively with GPUs, and used his celebrity status to get private looks at Google and OpenAI’s video models
“I’ve always been kind of into computers since I was young. Then, when film started to move from analog film to digital, I became more interested in that aspect of it. The visual-effects workflow for many years has included machine learning, so I can write pretty shitty Python scripts and stuff like that.
“With convolutional neural networks, which were the precursors to what the transformer can do, which is much more computation simultaneously, you would do things like look at what’s called a tensor. That’s the numerical translation of a visual image in numbers, like the batch number, the frame number and the red, green and blue values of each pixel in each frame. It’s just that simple. That numeric is called a tensor.
“You’d use a convolutional neural network to identify patterns that reveal what’s called edge detection or feature extraction, which is identifying patterns well enough to know, this is where the window ledge is, so we can more easily take the green-screen image out and replace it with something.
“That was familiar to me early on because, prior to Artists Equity, I had a small visual-effects company. I’ve worked with GPUs a lot too. The visual-effects guys said, ‘Hey, you should see. There are a couple: Google and this other company, OpenAI, are doing really interesting stuff with transformers in video.’
“I’ve learned that I can actually just call up and go, ‘Hey, it’s Ben Affleck. Can I come see what you’re doing?’ Sometimes people say yes, to my astonishment.”

It's really cool to see our robot packing items it hadn't observed in the training data, demonstrating zero-shot learning at our AI Summit.

Announcing our first open-weights world-action model, Praxis-1. It turns out that, unsurprisingly, you can get predictably better robotics policy performance by scaling third-person video. It’s been fun to see the different tasks the model can solve zero-shot around our office.
We’re already working with Noble Machines, Standard Bots, and Ultra, to deploy Praxis-1 on their embodiments, and are excited to get it to the hands of more partners soon.
Introducing Praxis-1, an open-weight World Action Model that turns our video pre-training expertise into real world control for robots.
Robot demonstration data is limited. But video data is infinite. Praxis-1 extends our bet that the best policy models will learn from video, and use that scale to bring embodied intelligence to every industry.
Praxis-1 is built on our large-scale video pre-training and real-time infrastructure, and acts as a policy model for robotics developers and researchers that works across any embodiment or environment, no matter how complex.
We are actively testing with early partners including Noble Machines, Standard Bots and Ultra, and will be releasing the weights publicly in the coming months.
