My latest for @texasmonthly on one of the most viral Mexican art events in recent memory, and what the artist has in store this week in San Antonio.

Inside John Dilandro's House of Lights you'll find hundreds of garden ornaments, religious figurines, gas station signs, weather vanes, license plates, trophies, and especially old-style, glass telephone insulators assorted in hodgepodge constellations. texasmonthly.com/culture/out…

On this day in 1933, author Cormac McCarthy was born.
In 2023, a few Texas writers reflect on what McCarthy meant to them and to the state. Read here: texasmonthly.com/arts-entert…
My latest art story from deep, almost too deep, in the heart of Texas. A sign out front says: "Welcome to look. Watch for rattlesnakes." There's a horror barn, graves for unknown cowboys, and a huge fire-ant nest decorated with dinosaurs (called "Jurassic Park"). Worth the trip.
On family land in rural Guadalupe County, John Dilandro fires cannons, mingles with snakes, and turns his past into a folk art shrine. ✨🐍 texasmonthly.com/culture/out…
Here’s my latest for @TexasMonthly, on a compelling photography project capturing extraction-industry landscapes on the drive from Midland to Odessa.
My latest for @TexasMonthly is this review of the SNL exhibition drawn from Lorne Michaels's personal archive at the HRC in Austin.

Included: How the "dick in a box" fits next to the Gutenberg Bible, what makes a show like this more than a memorabilia tour, and some pretty serious omissions in how the HRC deals with the original Sinead O'Connor pope photo (whose is it???)
My latest for @TexasMonthly is on newly discovered biographical details about Rauschenberg forcing a rethinking of his approach to materials and his relationship to his home state. Nice work by @MenilCollection on both the research and the beautiful show.

I reviewed this underrated gem of a first novel by a key figure in the Texas literary landscape. Check it out!
