glad to see people migrating to other places as this one becomes a steadily uglier howling void. if you’re heading elsewhere, I am mostly on the elephant website but slightly on the butterfly one too.

I published a small sample demonstrating how to use RealityKit’s new LowLevelMesh class to efficiently update geometry using Metal compute shaders.
Now you too can have an uncanny, rippling pond of mercury in your virtual living room.

since people are seeing it in the beta, I should mention a thing in Sequoia that I got to build with some terrific designers: the new wallpaper! it’s animated and dynamic—as a screen saver it’s different every time. dark mode’s gorgeous too. thrilled with how it turned out. #wwdc
iOS 17.5 (out now!) has a new thing I got to build with a bunch of great people: the Pride Radiance wallpaper. this year we went beyond the rainbow palette to include colors from the lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and nonbinary pride flags. really pleased with how it turned out.

ALT a pair of screenshots of the lock screen and home screen of an iPhone, showing the wallpaper in question, with a jaunty angle of the word “pride” composed of glowing, rainbow-colored threads of light. on the home screen, the design is shifted, spreading the threads out in a way that makes them more textural and abstract.
it didn’t get a mention but it showed up on a few slides: there’s a new watch face I worked on! it’s this one, with the fancy lighting (surprise)—the designers came up with a super cool concept and it was a lot of fun figuring out how to make it possible in real time. #AppleEvent
nice photo from @verge of the face’s other appearance—you can see a bit more of the way the light behaves here
a reminder if you are leaving this calamity of a website and would like to stay in touch: I am on other, currently less calamitous, websites

I’ll probably still be here until the lights go out (see: really liked this place) but the writing’s on the wall. see pinned tweet for some other places I’ll be; I’m also this username ~everywhere (sometimes prefixed with a _ or suffixed with a 0), including Gmail. keep in touch.
the other sites springing up have promise but the “everyone is here” vibes we may never have again. some of the funniest and most interesting stuff I’ve ever seen came from people super far from my regular circles and it’ll be a long time before federation-etc. makes that likely.
damn. for all its faults, I really liked this place and hoped it’d be able to hang on in some form despite that jackass. not looking likely.
Here’s the text of the email Musk sent to Twitter staff overnight.
Those who don’t commit to being “extremely hardcore” by 5pm ET today must leave the company. ‼️

reiterating as this site seemingly teeters on the abyss: I’m on Cohost as mahalis and Mastodon as [email protected]. TBD what bits go where.

Insulin is grown in huge vats by modified bacteria for basically no cost. It was the intention of the people who developed this technique that no one who need it ever be without. It does not have any justification costing any amount of money.
I love Halloween dearly but didn’t have time for a costume this year; in lieu, here is one of my favorites, “me tomorrow morning” circa 2012
still very likely I’ll be around here for a while but I’m gonna try to start putting stuff on Cohost too, like this: cohost.org/mahalis/post/1483…
sad to see—the RCX was the first embedded device I ever wrote code for, back when I thought I wanted to be a roboticist. still do sometimes.
#LEGO has announced that Mindstorms, the long-running robotics range, will be discontinued at the end of 2022. brickset.com/article/84219/l…
there was also a relatively unknown extra pair of sensors for temperature & rotation, the latter being really useful for precision movements
