currently building IRL networks and culture worldwide at @irl_energy - founder of refractionDAO, standard time, new forms festival.

Toronto, Ontario
Joined January 2008
I’ve been in over 50 cities over the past 5 years producing events, speaking to cultural operators on the ground (clubs, galleries, restaurants, festivals, etc) and I can say that we are in need of new models for culture writ large.

Every time I'm at an event with music industry careerists my conviction gets stronger that artists should be owning all of these companies

Just actually build something that is cool for SF, something that makes sense for that scene. Or help @GrayAreaorg or similar orgs already there. Also stop talking about doing this and actually do it. Its bananas that with so much money this hasn't been done on any level.
My experience partying all night at Berghain in Berlin made me think of how we're lacking this experience in the San Francisco tech scene. We can literally become the coolest, most tasteful social scene on Earth if we had our version of Berghain, but better. So let's build it. The best aspect of Berhain is how they select who gets in. The club has a vibe and atmosphere, and if you aren't wearing the right clothes or have the right demeanor, you don't get in. That's how you cultivate a tasteful crowd. We can improve on this by only letting in high agency, talented operators in the tech scene who can still pull off dope outfits, so no geeks. SF is in dire need of late night venues, and Berghain goes until 8am. That's a little too crazy for high net worth operators who are changing the world so we could do something like 2am. Berghain also is kinda dark and in a weird building so we'd put the club in a SoMa corporate office that we convert to speakeasy or barcade vibe. Maybe add a quiet area for people to bring their laptops and work? I honestly feel like we're improving on the Berghain form here, especially by swapping out the crowd of weird partiers in inappropriate clothes (or lack there of) with insanely cracked founders and engineers. I'm super stoked about this idea, SF tech could really run the dopest parties on the planet.

One old crypto-cypherpunk idea that I think will come back with a vengeance is autonomous organizations, where you combine the automation of smart contracts for deterministic functions + ai for subjective input: DAOs 2.0.
User-ownership on the internet sounds incredible until you need to figure out how to compensate everyone fairly. Bitcoin rewards hash rate. DeFi rewards liquidity. But how do you measure and reward contributions that aren't so easily quantified? @jessewldn on how AI might solve one of crypto's hardest problems: allocating ownership at scale.

If we want to change culture, we need to figure out the means to do it... what were building with IRL is going to do that. Everything that's happened w/ Refraction and @irl_energy so far is leading there... Its been a very hard time for a lot of people, its time to shift that.

1,088 transactions at a club night in toronto. 86% of the room paid for their drinks in $CADD ✨ no app, no seed phrase, nobody at the bar explaining anything.. we're taking this across canada with @TetraDigitalGrp, club night by club night xitter.cf/irl_energy/status/2095…
For one night at Rhythm, we turned a stablecoin into the currency of the room. We proved stablecoins can move from wallets into everyday culture, using IRL check-ins powered by @privy_io embedded wallets, and paid for drinks using @TetraDigitalGrp $CADD stablecoins running on @tempo 86% of everyone who checked in bought a drink with it. case study ↓
