Cricket has a way of deciding who you are early & then refusing to update the file. Matt Henry's file said: honest trier, the guy who gets 12 overs & then injured. For 13 Tests & 6 years, numbers agreed with his file. Average of 51.54. strike rate of 95. 31 wickets in the time it takes most quicks to either become someone or disappear. Henry did neither. He just sort of... waited. And then, somewhere in his mid-thirties, when fast bowlers are meant to be managing workloads, Henry decided to become the best pace bowler alive instead. Since 2024, 37 bowlers have taken more than 30 Test wickets. only one has a better average than Henry's 15.87, Josh Hazlewood, at 14.96, which is its own small miracle of nature. But Hazlewood can't touch Henry's strike rate: 31.5. Best of any pace bowler in that entire list. Henry not only getting wickets cheaply, he is getting them fast, over & over, like he has been saving them up. 80 wickets in 14 Tests in this period. Against Australia,India, England, South Africa,West Indies, Zimbabwe. Even his worst average in this period, 20.5 against South Africa, would be a career best for most seamers. Somewhere in this stretch, he helped New Zealand beat South Africa. Beat India in India, which still sounds wrong typing it out. And now England in England. Some bowlers peak early & spend rest of their lives telling stories about it. Matt Henry spent his early years being the story people told when they talked about wasted potential. Now he is the story you tell when you want to explain what happens when a fast bowler refuses to fade away.
