Welcome to the Richard Manuel Archive, a celebration of the life & music of vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter Richard Manuel of The Band.
This is a continuing research project to define his legacy outside of his tragedy, looking at his life and who he truly was.

I hear the sad news that John Till has passed. Richard’s former bandmate and friend. Till was also in Janis Joplin’s band for a period.

My favourite account on Twitter has come to an end. Thank you, Breanna, for championing Richard Manuel. This account will be missed.
And we now come full circle, a year with Richard documenting important dates in his life, his expansive musical legacy, and the impact he continues to make in the lives of those who listen to him.
With that, the RMA is complete. Thank you all for everything.

I sit down with the legendary Bob Clearmountain. I talk to Bob about re-mixing The Band's entire from Music From Big Pink through Cahoots.

Say what you will about the man, but he was absolutely right when he said this about Richard. It remains one of the statements about Richard that rings truest to his sheer talent & spirit and the effect it had on people, still does, and always will. His gift is timeless.

Now is very fashionable to insult Eric, but I will defend this trench with him no matter what.

One of the real hidden gems of Richard's career comes in this duet with his good friend Eric Clapton on the classic blues tune Last Night, which closes out Clapton's 1976 album No Reason to Cry, a full-Band affair. It's a stunning rendition, check it out.

The album truly is a full-Band affair- the entire group served as personnel, it was recorded at Shangri-La Studios, there is also a duet with Rick Danko (and even one with Bob Dylan), and it features the early Manuel-Danko penned Beautiful Thing.

It’s a good time to re-share my writings on the Robertson / Manuel songwriting partnership. Robbie's knack for chord progressions and pictorial storytelling fit so well with Manuel’s elite sense of melody and yearning lyrics.

That particular sport practiced by TV producers in the 60s and 70s that consisted of always focusing on the wrong person and not focusing on the person who is singing or doing the guitar solo.
#OTD in 1976, The Band played at The Summit in Houston, Texas.
Richard gave a particularly rousing rendition of Chest Fever that night, and while he can't be seen in this footage, he can be heard loud and clear.

#OTD in 1968, the masterpiece that started it all, Music From Big Pink, debuted. Words cannot do this album justice, and Richard's magic continues to shine through every note he sings and plays on it.

Apparently Richard missed out on that sunglasses memo on the right...

Starting #OTD in 1970 and continuing until July 5, The Band joined the Festival Express tour through Canada.
Richard absolutely rocks it on the keys in this performance of Slippin' & Slidin' from the tour.

#OTD in 1975, The Basement Tapes by Bob Dylan and The Band was released.
It features several songs written or co-written by Richard, as well as a few lead vocal turns, including the great gem Ruben Remus.

#OTD in 1969, The Band played the first of two days at the Toronto Pop Festival, marking the first time the Hawks returned to Toronto as The Band.
