I'm launching a new show with @readtechnically! 🧨
How do we stop agents doing what they shouldn't? What do AI researchers actually do all day? Can the cloud run out of space?
With Technically Speaking we're making complex ideas in software and AI accessible with the people building them 💥
@grinich @jefrankle @slippylolo @nerdsane @JustJake
it seems like every week the AI wave exposes a new set of technical terms that we should know about.
so we phoned a friend (@meganreyno), and this Thursday we’re launching Technically Speaking - bringing in technical founders & leaders to break down the technical problem they’ve spent years obsessing over.
the Season 1 lineup is downright effervescent:
- Michael Grinich (WorkOS) on Auth
- Jonathan Frankle (Databricks) on AI research
- Julien Launay and Sesh Nalla (Datadog) on RL
- Jake Cooper (Railway) on Cloud
- and five (5!) more special guests to be announced
new episodes posting every Thursday until the holidays.
who should we have on next?
Two weeks ago, we made Top K faster. This week, we made COUNT faster, and explored how real search workloads combine text with filters and sort orders.

Enjoyed when @GergelyOrosz shared that @stevemconstrux (Code Complete author) told him the biggest challenge in software development today is energy.
The room full of infra people: yes, more power and compute ⚡️
He meant human energy/agency 😂
Which sort of made his point…
Really enjoyed last night’s fireside chat with @GergelyOrosz of @Pragmatic_Eng and @WorkOS founder @grinich.
I think this story about a convo he had with @CockroachDB founder @petermattis, and how simultaneously exhausting and energizing this moment in time feels, resonated with a lot of us in the room.

Thank you @GergelyOrosz and everyone who joined last night for The @Pragmatic_Eng live in NYC!
The software industry is evolving rapidly. More has changed in the last year than the previous decade, and it’s only getting faster. What an incredible time to be a builder!👷🛠️

Congress is considering a bill that could make useful AI agents harder to build and use, without making malicious ones easier to stop.
The Stealth Bot Prohibition Act (H.R. 9915) targets bots that don’t disclose their identity and purpose, and can "burden a website’s technical or commercial operation." It also prohibits intentionally disguising bots as human users.
Preventing fraud and abuse is a goal we share, but this bill as written is too broad and unspecific. I believe as written it will have unintended negative consequences.
For example: an agent comparing prices might benefit a consumer while challenging a merchant’s business model. A research assistant might not know every eventual use of a page before opening it. And requiring disclosure of an agent’s purpose could expose sensitive information about the person using it, such as someone looking for private medical advice.
Developers would have to navigate that uncertainty with a threat of substantial penalties. Large companies can absorb legal and compliance costs, but small teams and startups may abandon useful products, leaving people with fewer choices and less market innovation.
Congress should give the market more time to develop. Any legislation in this area needs to address demonstrated harms, with clear evidence it will improve outcomes.
We must protect users while also preserving their ability to benefit from the enormous productivity improvements of AI.
I’m urging Congress not to advance H.R. 9915. My full letter below:

Neon is leading the pack for agent-native databases, and auth.md enables those agents to signup without a human involved.
Ship your own auth.md today: workos.com/auth-md
Agents can now get a Neon database without signup, and a human can claim it later. Your agent won’t stop because it needs you to create an account first.
We’re calling this flow Claimable Neon. It implements the @WorkOS auth.md spec: neon.com/claimable-neon

For engineers in NYC next Wednesday: doing an epic whiteboarding session with @turbopuffer
From zero to building a v fast database that's also cheap to operate
Agents generate more data than before so understanding primitives that are both cheap + fast is v helpful

Today we're announcing our $100M Series C at a $1B valuation, led by @ICONIQCapital. It's our third round in 14 months and brings our total funding to over $200m
The round came together in less than 48 hours.
We weren't planning to raise. Then new ARR doubled last quarter and we crossed 600+ customers including public companies and enterprises with $2B in revenue. Rillet AI agent usage is growing 70% each month and CFOs are replacing Oracle Fusion, SAP and Workday to run their companies on Rillet.
We also announced our alliance with EY and officially partnered with more than half of the top 20 CPA firms.
@RilletHQ is creating an entirely new category of finance infrastructure. With Rillet, the ERP becomes the harness for the modern finance organization, where people and agents share the same financial data, apply the same accounting policies and controls, and work from a single, continuously updated view of the business. Agents perform increasingly complex financial work, while finance teams retain visibility, approval authority and a complete audit trail.
Thank you to our customers for believing in the mission and building the future of finance with us. We could not do this without you.
Thank you to the Rillet team. As I say often, building Rillet is our own version of sending rockets to Mars. It is incredibly difficult. You make it look easy.
Finally, thank you to our investors. To ICONIQ for leading the round and to our existing and new investors for building with us. @sequoia , @a16z, Sequoia Global Equities, @BainCapVC, @oakhcft, @BatteryVentures, @FirstMarkCap, @scalevp, and @creandum.
Back to work :)
