The Ramp was ours! Installed in 1948 to help Nanjo Singh escape the fans it was still a big part of the action in our era. NWA champion Ric Flair & Harley Race use it to the utmost in this bout in April 1982. Our most popular story on the site is...'The Ramp' mapleleafwrestling.blogspot.…

For me Flair's best year is 1979! 1980,81,82,83,84 not too shabby either😁 From a Toronto perspective in 1979 he challenged for the Canadian/U.S. titles (he won that one) and faced ... Tiger Jeet Singh Ricky Steamboat Dino Bravo WWF champ Bob Backlund Jimmy Snuka Ray Stevens 🙏
I think the best years are 82 & 85. There are periods in '85 you can follow him from place to place on the road through footage. Steamboat matches aren't a good starting point IMO. They aren't as face/heel as most stuff. That they were different is part of why they were special.

One of the best matchups of the Mid-Atlantic era in Toronto was Ric Flair vs Harley Race over the NWA Title. Their battles at Maple Leaf Gardens were the epitome of professional wrestling at its best and averaged 15,000 fans a bout. Science & Violence! Taken at the November 15 1981 card celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Wrestling at MLG. 🙏

In Summer 1983 Crazy Chris Colt & Johnny Valiant had a vicious & bloody feud across Southern Ontario on Dave McKigney's Big Bear Wrestling indy circuit. McKigney had promoted from the mid 1960s with hits and misses but hit again from 1981-1983 with top talent and tons of action -and will be covered in the next book!

Looking at some of the great tag teams we saw in the Mid-Atlantic era for the next book ...Patterson & Stevens, Ole & Gene Anderson, Backlund & Bravo, Steamboat & Bravo, Youngblood & Weaver, Valentine & Stevens, Snuka & Stevens, Flair & Mosca, Steamboat & Youngblood, Piper & Stevens, Flair & Parisi, Flair & Andre, Markoff & Volkoff, Flair & Wahoo, Ole Anderson & Piper, Dusty & Wahoo, Piper & Abdullah. And the East-West Connection Jesse Ventura & Adrian Adonis.... 🙏One of my favorites from watching AWA TV- in person at Maple Leaf Gardens in January 1982...

Who has some good ramp stories? For me nothing better than Ric Flair & Harley Race battling on the ramp over the NWA title. They exchanged those long held up suplexes and Race used his falling headbutt for hits -and misses. Piledrivers! Flair always ended up covered in blood. Photo from November 1981.

One of the more colorful entrances up the stairs and to the ramp was Jesse 'The Body' Ventura. He and East-West Connection tag partner Adrian Adonis appeared here briefly while moving from AWA to WWF. That team one of my all time favorites. Ventura gets a lot of flak for his wrestling but as a team they were fantastic. And Jesse one of the best commentators ever. Happy Sunday! AC

Harley Race makes his way to a Toronto cab after a card at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1981. He and opponent Ric Flair always had bandages on their heads. After watching them in the ring, outside the ring, and on the ramp, it was no surprise! Flair was always covered in blood and had once worn a nose brace coming and going to the arena. Legends both. 🙏

That old scoreboard! What a great photo. I took one in 1981 while Andre the Giant was waiting on Roddy Piper. Sacrificed the ramp to get the unlit scoreboard in the shot.😀Was sitting in the golds above the ramp for that one.
The Dominion scoreboard clock at Maple Leaf Gardens, along with the end Blues section displaying out-of-town scores with the logos, was a thing of beauty. #Nostalgia #Leafs

It's Saturday TV wrestling day in Toronto! Next up on Maple Leaf Wrestling is footage from Maple Leaf Gardens with U.S. champion Sgt. Slaughter taking on Jay Youngblood. Earlier in the day Slaughter had participated in a tournament in Charlotte to win the title then flew up with some of the others to appear in T.O. Norm Kimber makes the intros....🙏

The card that started it all - 48 years ago Oct 22 1978. The first Toronto card associated with Mid Atlantic Wrestling. This came after a year long partnership with Verne Gagne & the AWA which had followed the end of the Sheik era in summer 1977. They set the town on fire with a younger more exciting roster. FLAIR & STEAMBOAT the main reasons.🙏

This Sunday in 1981 I was heading down to an afternoon of wrestling at Maple Leaf Gardens. Fun card! The tag bout with the oddball team of Leroy Brown & Tony Parisi went over big with fans and got the win over Ole & Koloff. Piper vs Wahoo in a wild brawl. Killer Kahn flattened Youngblood on his way to meet the wrath of Andre (re broken leg) a couple of cards later. Kahn, Slaughter, Studd all great monster heel types. Good times in Toronto!
