(1) As someone who grew up in East Germany and has been researching its history for over 15 years, I find the current debate extremely disconcerting. For years, we have worked to raise awareness of these issues with nuanced, differentiated findings. And yet, here we are again:
(3) Does that make anything better? Where is the attention to everyday life when it comes to making real change? Talk shows are filled, books are sold in abundance, podiums are applauded. The usual suspects dance merrily through the discourse circus. All ver well.
Some states in East Germany are going to the polls very soon (and the results might be grim). However, I’m very pleased that the Süddeutsche Zeitung, one of Germany's leading newspapers, has recommended my Treuhand book as essential reading.
