I'm 41, and I'm going to be dancing on a stage to songs I loved 20+ years ago. This is my dance partner, Caitlin.
We're raising money for a great cause: firstlightstars.swell.gives/…
young enough to understand every internet reference and old enough to remember when the internet was a place you physically went to sit down
This wasn't long after I started my role at UAB, and it was one of the first major platform shifts I had to navigate.
(with hundreds of accounts, mind you)
p.s. It's still called Twitter
I've started every speaking engagement this year with a little character development. Who I am, what makes me tick, and why we might get along.
It's exposition, darling. Every great storyteller uses it.
A little personality before the professional opinions. Connection first.
Getting ready for a virtual presentation. It's pre-recorded, so I'm only doing the LIVE Q&A afterward and during (in the chat).
Why am I nervous?
Because I'm putting some new ideas out there in my industry. You can hope it's well received, but you can't guarantee it.
I grew up doing theater, so I can spot someone performing for attention before they finish their opening monologue.
The comment section is an incredible place to study human behavior if you don't mind losing your faith in it.
The best part about being another year older? Realizing you’re the exact same person you were at 9 years old.
I think everyone should participate in community theater at least once.
You learn collaboration, creative problem-solving, time management, conflict resolution, and how to keep a pleasant expression when someone misses the same cue for the ninth consecutive rehearsal.
I don't need everyone to agree with me.
I would, however, appreciate a little more creativity from the people who don't.
A squirrel is climbing up the side of my house and screaming at me through the window. If I were any more Appalachian, I might derive some meaning from this.
Birmingham residents will complain that there's nothing to do, receive a list of 37 things happening that weekend, and explain why none of them count.
I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt.
I also believe in updating my assessment as new evidence becomes available.
