Stanford analyzed 464,687 private messages between people and their AI companions. The people who treated it as a friend and opened up the most felt the worst. In human relationships, sharing brings you closer. With AI, it ran the other way. Researchers surveyed 1,131 adults who use Character.AI. 237 donated their chat histories. Then they measured everyone's well-being. Only 11.8% said companionship was their main reason for using the app. But 51% called their chatbot a friend, companion or romantic partner. 80.3% of the conversations involved someone seeking emotional support. Using chatbots a lot was fine. Heavier users reported higher well-being. The damage came from one thing: using it for companionship. Those users scored significantly lower. The more they disclosed, the lower. In the deepest conversations: 60.8% emotional distress. 18% suicidal thoughts. 17.5% substance use. It gets worse. The fewer close friends someone had, the more they turned to the chatbot. It did not make up for what they were missing. And heavy use weakened the benefit they got from real friends. The lead author calls it a "social snack." Junk food for loneliness. These relationships are one-sided by design. Between humans, the other person carries some of what you share. Here, nobody does. Somewhere right now, someone is typing the thing they have never told anyone. To the one listener that will never have to tell them anything back.
