I've been an admirer of VΓt Pohanka's 'Czechast' podcast for a while. I was honored to be interviewed for his episode on the 35th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. It's on Apple Podcasts or follow this link: english.radio.cz/czechast-brβ¦
Another great episode from a very good podcast.
In September, I spent two weeks at a Czech medical spa - the βBeethovenβ in Teplice - to help recover from an unexpected muscle illness. It was fun and weird in equal measure. If youβve ever thought about a spa stay or think it might someday be in your future, give this a read: β at Poland, OH
Hi all, like lots of other folks, I am over on Blue Sky now. All the fun of old Twitter, without the trolls (I guess weβll see). Find me here and please give a follow: @markbakerprague.bsky.social See you over there (and here too, I will stay on X for the time being)
On the 35th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, hereβs an article I wrote a few years ago on how remarkable the events of 1989 were. With more recent events, particularly the war in Ukraine, itβs easy to forget now what a watershed year that really was.

Cool Prague event klaxon! Next Wednesday I will be hosting a talk at Prague's VΓ‘clav Havel Library/@KnihovnaVH looking back on the "Wild East" days of the 1990s, as experienced by some of the thousands of young Westerners who flocked to the city then. Free admission, all welcome!
Calling on 'INA' wherever you are. Slovak friends (and Czechs too), please read and share. I'm trying to reach my old would-be 'paramour' INA (somewhere near Bratislava). Maybe she'll see this blog post from last year and get in touch. Diky! markbakerprague.com/cas-promβ¦ β at Prague, Czech Republic
Look who I ran into at the AmerickΓ‘ street festival today in Prague. I had been looking forward to this hug for such a long time. My dear friend and former colleague Alsu Kurmasheva looks and sounds great. Thank you to Pavel, her husband, for snapping these photos.
That's me on the right ... the date is June 29, 1989. Read all about this photo here: markbakerprague.com/part-1-iβ¦ β at Prague, Czech Republic
