VIDEO A/B TESTING on YouTube?!
Ok I've thought a lot about this since the announcement, and the more I think about it... the less I like it? Mainly because there are SO many unanswered questions right now
If I'm watching a video, do I know if it's part of an A/B test?
If I'm reading comments on a video, how do I know which version they watched?
If someone's comment has timestamps, do they break if I'm seeing the other version of the video?
How long after publish can creators potentially be A/B testing a video?
How different are the videos allowed to be?
I hate to be the "old school" creator who never wants anything to change, but I fear A/B testing THE VIDEO ITSELF is just 1 step further than what I can fully grasp
šØ Huge update: YouTube just announced video AB testing, thumbnail generation & more.
Iām here in the YouTube offices in New York⦠and theyāve just made their biggest update in years.
Hereās the 3 changes I am most excited about + my take as a strategist running some of the biggest channels on youtube:
1. Video AB testing
YouTube is going to allow you to upload three different versions of a video now (starting with shorts and then rolling out to more) and test them over a period to see which gets the best watch time.
My take: I am so excited by this and it feels like something weāve all wanted for years. How often are you stuck between two different intros, or two different ways of ending a video?
Now having the ability to get real data back is insane. I am going to heavily use this with intros.
2. Dynamic thumbnail testing for different audiences
YouTube will now actually dynamically test different thumbnails with different audience segments. Allowing you to have different packaging for your returning viewers vs casual/new.
My take: This is very interesting. Current AB testing for thumbnails essentially helps you find the best thumbnail for the biggest majority of your viewers⦠but that isnāt the best thumbnail for every segment.
A core viewer might click on something very different to a brand new viewer. I think this will allow creators to print more views and test new styles that previously might have never won in the test.
3. Thumbnail generation in YouTube studio
Directly in your studio you will have an āask studio packaging assistantā that can analyze your video and past performance and generate thumbnails (and titles) for your video.
My take: This oneās been coming. The interesting thing for me is that when presenting this, youtube said something very interesting: they will match your style.
This is the hardest step when using most Ai thumbnail generators, so if they can pull this off⦠could change the game.
Really excited to see how these new features work.
Youtube shared that they will be tested and rolled out in the coming months.

The green card system is a mess anyway. It used to take a couple of months outside the country. Now 12-18 minimum even on a marriage visa. If you apply in the us it take almost as long and currently youāre recommended to not leave the us unless you apply for a special visa for that purpose (almost as long as the green card)
It seems our modern politics doesnāt actually want to make anything work. Just signal allegiance.
This just makes everything more confusing.
china could drop a nuke in silicon valley and still wouldnāt do this much damage

I refuse to support any policy that makes it harder for the world's smartest people to come to the US.

If I understand this correctly, this is a direct assault on the US talent supply pipeline. Getting a work permit after studies and then applying for a green card is how smart people enter this country. Most people who come to the US to study do so because they want to get a job here and stay. It is as if the current administration did not want talented people to come here.

Force all our best researchers to leave the USA and go back to their home countries if they want to become Americans. Complete destruction of America's competitive advantage. Probably the worst policy i have ever seen and it's facing some stiff competition

USCIS just dropped PM-602-0199. The new line: adjustment of status is "extraordinary" relief, and choosing it over consular processing can count against you, even for H-1B and L-1 workers with dual intent.
Section 245(a) does not say adjustment is disfavored; it says the Secretary "may" adjust status in his discretion, which is the same discretionary structure Congress uses for many forms of relief that are not treated as extraordinary disfavor. More importantly, Congress has repeatedly amended section 245 to expand adjustment, including section 245(i), section 245(k), the LIFE Act, and the dual-intent provisions for H and L nonimmigrants. The memo's reading that AOS is a grudging exception cannot be squared with a statute Congress has consistently broadened.
USCIS is applying long-standing law and prior court decisions to require certain aliens with temporary visas who decide they want to permanently reside in the U.S. to return to their home countries to apply for permanent visas through the @StateDept.
We're returning to the original intent of the law to ensure aliens navigate our nationās immigration system properly.

The latest radical example of an all out assault on legal immigration.
Adjusting status to legal permanent resident from inside the US is not a āloophole.ā Itās the process for ppl whoāve followed the rules & have a legal mechanism to pursue residency.
Just horrible policy.

Under the logic of this new USCIS policy, even someone like our First Lady @FLOTUS could have been told:
āGo back to your home country and apply for your green card through consular processing instead.ā
Meaning the future President of the United States may have had to spend years separated from his wife while waiting abroad for approval.
Thatās how absurd this gets when bureaucrats start treating Adjustment of Status as some extraordinary act of government āgraceā instead of a normal part of a functioning legal immigration system.
@USCIS is supposed to be the plumber that maintains the pipes of our immigration system.
Instead, these people are taking a sledgehammer to the entire water line.

While adjustment of status is discretionary under INA 245 it has never been interpreted as an extraordinary form of relief and USCIS is inventing a new standard to deprive noncitizens from getting green cards in the US.
Mark Chepel retweeted
Trump's DHS seeks to restrict the Adjustment of Status option for legal immigrants, eliminating the most common and utilized legal path to permanent residence under US law. The implications of this are massive and will affect thousands of immigrants eligible for a green card.
This is a radical change to immigration policy, forcing anyone applying for a green card to leave the country indefinitely, forget whether they have American kids, spouse, etc.
The talking point that we do want legal immigration, we just want people to get in line and follow the rules, is BS. This is an attempt to blow up the line, blow up the rules, and make it insanely difficult to immigrate legally.

The biggest bullshit move by DHS in its history. So everyone on a O1 or H1B visa would have to stop working legally in the US, go back to their country and wait for years of backlog? This includes top scientists in our universities, founders of billion dollar companies (at least 3 just in our portfolio would be affected by the way). And if we look at individual countries it becomes even more bs. Indians would have to wait decades. Russians donāt have anywhere to go (there is no US embassy in Russia, hello?).
This is the worst imaginable way to disrupt important work for the country and pretend youāre fighting some loophole.

Is this New at @USCIS policy memo legal? Possibly, going forward.
Will this policy outlast this administration? No.
Is it a stiff arm in the face from @USCISDirector Joe, who is possibly the laziest USCIS Director in history? Yes.
Will this memo be challenged in court? Yes.
Should you file for adjustment the status today? Talk to your lawyer.
Will this memo apply to applications already filed? It should not be because this is a policy change that will certainly be challenged under the APA and should in no circumstance be retroactive.
We look forward to the courts deciding.
