I was horrified to hear of the attack on Australian MP Helen Haines. My thoughts are with Helen and her family at this difficult time.
Nobody who serves their community should face violence while doing their job. Sending Helen our full support from the UK House of Commons.

I feel sick hearing what's happened to Helen Haines outside her Wangaratta office. No one should be harmed for serving their community. Thinking of Helen, her family and her team, and praying for her recovery.

Sad news to hear of the death of Neil Andrew AO. Neil was the Liberal Member for Wakefield between 1983 and 2004 and was the 24th Speaker of the House of Representatives.
More than two decades on from his retirement, Neil is still remembered as one of the best Speakers – fair and firm, with an outstanding depth of knowledge of the Standing Orders, and a man who respected tradition. Presiding over some intense debates, especially on the GST, Neil was admired for his calm authority.
As Speaker, he also improved security at Parliament and introduced programs to help the public better understand the workings of our democracy.
A farmer before his political career, Neil served on many notable agricultural boards after leaving politics. He also worked as a mediator, putting to good use his skills as a former Speaker.
Neil spent his final days at the Mary Potter Hospice in Adelaide surrounded by his dear family. And on behalf of the Liberal Party, I conveyed to Neil our deep appreciation for his deeds and service. His was a life well lived. May Neil Andrew AO rest in peace.

Statement regarding Hon Bruce Baird AM
Jen and I are saddened to hear that our dear friend Hon Bruce Baird AM has passed away and extend our deepest sympathies to his children Mike, Julia and Stephen and the entire Baird clan.
To me Bruce was a giant, a mentor and a friend who celebrated and lived out his strong Christian faith, loved his family served his country, his state and our community in the Shire where he was the much beloved local member for Cook.
Bruce had a tremendous sense of humour and a wonderful heart. He loved life, was always active and quite physically brave - taking on some of the world’s most onerous ocean swims, and always returning to his Shire birthplace for the annual Shark Island swim. He was a magnificent witness and role model, who showed the way to serve as a Christian in politics.
Bruce leaves behind a rich legacy in his family, who he loved and was so proud of, speaking constantly about all of them any chance he could, as well as all those he encouraged and supported, which I was privileged to have been one.
His achievements are significant, most notably the transforming effect he had on our home city of Sydney as the Minister for Sydney’s successful Olympic bid. But there are many more.
In my eyes his greatest moments were his selfless care and love for his wife Judy after the illness that eventually took her life. All of Bruce’s best qualities were on display at that time and it was humbling and beautiful to observe him in those days. They are both now united again in Jesus.
God bless you Bruce and your memory my dear and beloved friend, because you were such a rich and great blessing to all of us.

This is a hard-fought win for our veterans’ community.
But they should never have had to fight so hard to reverse this great injustice done to them.
We owe our veterans a debt of gratitude for their service.
Labor’s cap, seeking to short-change them, was cruel and crude.
BREAKING NEWS: You did it! The Government has taken the proposed $5,000 allied health cap off the table.
A huge win for veterans, their families and everyone who stood with them.
To everyone who shared their story, called, wrote to or visited their MP, or came to Canberra: thank you. You made sure veterans could not be ignored. They never should have been.
We acknowledge the Government for listening and changing course. We also thank the Nationals, Liberals, One Nation, Greens and crossbench independents who backed veterans and led the charge in Parliament. You listened, stood with us and gave this fight tremendous support.
We welcome this decision. Now veterans and providers must be heard in shaping what comes next.
The fight for fair care continues.
We have won on scrapping the cap. Now it’s time to end the low-balling and fix the system.

My thoughts are with the people of Nepal and all those affected by the devastating floods including families still waiting for news of loved ones.
The scale of the loss is heartbreaking, and we are conscious Australians are among those reported missing.
