Under Article 2(1)(i) of the Nationality Act, if I were born in Japan to naturalised Japanese citizens, I would be a Japanese citizen. In everyday Japanese, people say Nihonjin (日本人, "Japanese person"), which applies to anyone, of any ethnicity, who is a Japanese citizen. This would *obviously* not make me of the same *ethnicity* as the majority of people in Japan. The majority ethnic group in Japan is called Yamato (大和民族, Yamato minzoku) making up roughly 98% of Japan's population. An older synonym is Wajin (和人 / 倭人, "Wa people"). There are other ethnic groups like Ainu (Hokkaidō) and Ryukyuan people (Okinawa). My point with English & British is the same. Being born and raised in England, I am English in the sense that - like Japan - England is a country. Also like the analogy with Japan, I am not from the majority ethnicity of England, which is Anglo-Saxon. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
