THIS DAY IN HISTORY: On March 18, 1990, thieves entered the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston & stole 13 pieces of art (including works by Rembrandt & Vermeer) worth $5 million. It's considered the biggest art heist in history & remains unsolved. The art is still missing.
We love stories about people using their skills to help kids, and our piece on astrophysicist @MarkGalassi is a great example! Mark set up a chess club, teaches coding and helps young people become researchers. “I love what I do so much that I want to pass it on,” he said.

Ugh. I'm so frustrated to be continually asked to participate in talks & panels on Zoom specifically about tech ethics & #opensource. There are great #FOSS systems for this. See @fosdem's successful use of solely FOSS solutions for over 30,000 participants. #jitsi #BigBlueButton

[3/3] Finally, a shout-out to @conservancy, a non-profit organization that provides a home to many cool #FOSS projects --- including #Git, which so many students and researchers rely on (via @github) in their day-to-day work 💚 sfconservancy.org/

[2/3] See thread 👆 for key points. The #OpenAccess post-print is on #SocArXiv 👉 doi.org/10.31235/osf.io/ye7s… In particular, check out the primer to #FOSS, which is aimed at the research community broadly, including (i) researchers in any field, and (ii) complete novices 👶🍼🤓

I have spent a bunch of time, again, working through licence options on #SocArXiv 🤯 @socarxiv @OSFramework @OSFSupport why the limited selection of @creativecommons options? E.g. why allow CC-BY, but not CC-BY-SA? I have looked through all supporting info, pointers welcome 🤓

#QueensGambit is, without a doubt, the best portrayal of both the chess world and game that I have ever seen.

[9/9] What do you think? Let us know! The preprint is now under review, so comments are welcome 🙏 Personally, I hope students in particular find the primer helpful --- below are some of the books I consulted in the process, so you don't have to read them 😉

[8/9] This raises questions about the digital infrastructure around research, e.g. software for management of teaching content, research funds. Should we as a community insist on #FOSS #FLOSS systems, or rely on proprietary ones instead? You can probably guess our take on this 🤔

[7/9] The key lesson is that #FOSS #FLOSS promotes collaboration and helps ensure the longevity of software, including #reproducibility of results that rely on that software. When it comes to research as knowledge production + dissemination, everyone wins with software freedom 🏆

[6/9] We then present the #GNU Scientific Library (GSL) as a case study, discussing the landscape of resources for scientific computing in the '90s, when #GSL was created, and lessons learnt from it since. @markgalassi is one of the creators of #GSL 💾 👉 gnu.org/software/gsl/
