India saw about 496 million people lifted out of poverty between 2011 and 2023 in one of the world’s fastest declines in this metric, the World Bank said, although the gains remain uneven. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Very insightful quote. "An economy is a machine for turning energy into wealth, and without energy, it all comes to a halt."
Nothing makes me more bullish about the US than the thought of bringing back nuclear power. An economy is a machine for turning energy into wealth, and without energy, it all comes to a halt.

Bismarck was one of top statesmen of the last 3 centuries.
As always, Francis P. Sempa in @amspectator with a must-read for the strategically minded with lessons of #statecraft from #Bismarck. spectator.org/the-iron-chanc… Excerpts and lessons, "Insight One: Great powers should never be led by the policy of minor states, even if “public opinion” as shaped by the press encourages it... "Insight Two: Wars should be fought, and peace concluded based on political considerations and with a view toward the future, even if that causes ill-will with the military establishment... "Insight Three: Martial spirit within the armed forces should be encouraged, but 'the task of keeping its results within such limits as the nation’s need of peace can justly claim is the duty of the political, not the military, heads of state...' "Insight Four: In victory, magnanimity."

Colleges and universities should immediately drop the now dumbed down SAT and replace it with the Classic Learning Test (CLT). At a minimum the CLT should be accepted as an alternative to the SAT and ACT. thomasaquinas.edu/news/tac-s…

Europe used to be the leader in innovation and commerce. The original big risk takers. How far it has fallen.
Insane that the European Union is represented only once amongst the 50 largest companies in the world.

Tyler Cowen: 'I am not even sure what to say at this point. We need a radical revaluation of this work, and of the associated policy arguments. More generally, this is only a single step in the story of how AI is going to revise economic science, and indeed past research more generally. As I stress in many of my recent talks, there will be significant gains and losses in status, with the losses often outweighing the gains. I see this as one of those cases.'

The Real AI Bottleneck Humans can read about 238 words per minute. Meanwhile, AI can generate ~4500 words per minute. This is a 19X difference. The huge disparity between how fast AI can generate content compared to how fast we can consume it means that more information doesn’t equate to more knowledge, better decisions, or increased productivity. Unless we ensure AI helps us determine what merits our attention and shortens our information-decision-action cycle, this abundance will overwhelm us. markmcneilly.substack.com/p/…

🎓 The best scholars aren't surrounding themselves with affirmation. They're actively courting disagreement. And that requires viewpoint diversity.

A good reason to reject irredentism on principle: any nation can manufacture historical claims against neighboring territories, even distant lands. It’s in the collective interest of states to shut down all annexationist ambitions.

🔎 Where does the pressure on professors to avoid "controversial" topics come from? In a new survey of HxA members, many gave the same answer: other professors. In collaboration with @Hartz_PhD and @epkaufm, this new survey identifies which topics feel off-limits on campus and why.

Marketing in the Age of AI I foresee ten trends that will shape how marketing will be done going forward. They can be thought of in three groupings: --Intelligence: How firms understand customers. Firms move from periodically researching customer segments to continuously understanding individuals. --Interaction: How firms reach customers. Companies move from marketing to human buyers alone to interacting with both humans and their AI agents. --Organization: How marketing itself operates. Firms move from human-executed marketing tactics to human-directed processes executed by AI. markmcneilly.substack.com/p/…?

unfathomable damage done to America. You could have abundant, cheap, emission-free electricity flowing to your home right now if it weren't for these people.
Ralph Nader, 1997: “When we came out against nuclear power in the early '70s, the government had predicted that there would be 1,000 nuclear plants by the year 2000 in the United States, and there's 109 and shrinking, as more and more get shut down.” pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline…
