Here we go again. Above inflation rise to the minimum wage which will cause even more pressure on businesses and feed into inflation. It will make life even less affordable for the lowest paid.
Cue the usual "your business isn't viable if you cant afford to pay a living wage" posts from the terminally thick that would struggle to run a bath, never mind a business or employ people.
Here, for anyone that can be bothered to educate themselves even in the slightest, is why the circa 50% rise in minimum wage in the last 6 years has made life less affordable and contributed to the cost of living crisis.
Minimum wage employee 2020:
Total cost to employer (wages + NI + pension): £18,460
Employee can make 18,460 widgets in a year.
Cost per widget (ignoring any other cost or profit): £1
Take-home pay: £15,202
Widgets the employee can afford: 15,202
2027 min wage of of £13.20:
Total cost to employer (wages + NI + pension): £29,436
Widgets made in a year (same productivity): 18,460
Cost per widget: £1.59
Take-home pay: £22,050
Widgets the employee can afford: 13,868
They’ve had a 45% increase in take-home pay but can afford 9% fewer widgets.
This is why you are worse off. Now factor in other business costs, higher corporation tax, higher energy costs, higher risk from new legislation, maintaining pay differential, etc. etc. etc..
Yet the thick "yOuR bUsInEsS iSnT ViAbLe iF yOu cAnT aFfoRd AnOtHeR 50p" brigade are out in force championing this.
Just increase the tax free allowance and reduce spending, for f***s sake. They are just driving businesses off a cliff in the UK.
This is right on it. It’s become pointless. Having a small business in this country is brutal.
Maybe its just me, but running a small business has never - certainly not in my lifetime - been as difficult as it is right now and I'm struggling to find reasons to carry it on.
Its certainly not for the work life balance, or for the money. Its not for an easy life, or to relieve avoid stress.
So what is it for? To keep other people employed? To keep paying ever more tax?
Its been 25 years, and I think I'm done.

I earn £100 grand a year.
I have a detached house. 2 cars and my wife is a full time home maker.
I can just about afford this. I probably couldn’t afford the house I own if I was buying for the first time today.
My salary puts me in the top 5% of earners in the UK.
Top 5% to have a similar standard of living to Homer Simpson.
That is a disgrace.
We have a flatter salary distribution than Soviet Russia and the highest taxes and borrowing costs we’ve seen in generations.
Success is almost impossible because our tax system means hard work makes you a stressed out tax cow, not wealthy and certainly not free.
We need something radical.
Less state.
More family.
Less handouts.
More reward for risk.
Instead. Tomorrow, Labour will offer another batch of policies which will send one message to aspirational Brits: why bother.
I read a piece in the FT this week about the price of being middle class in Britain now and it said a couple earning £436,000 combined take home £216,000. That’s a crazy amount of tax, and it doesn't include VAT on purchases, council tax, stamp duty or other taxes (I think does include pension contributions). I can’t stop thinking about it.
New Cold War in full swing?
Exclusive:
Three of Britain’s four nuclear deterrent submarines are out at sea in an "unusual" situation, @thetimes has been told
It has been at least five years since this happened, according to former naval source

More hours getting cut unfortunately. It’s either pass on costs to already stretched customers or cut labour hours. Hellish times for small business. I’m all for good pay but a business has to be able to afford it. There’s nothing left. @UKHospKate
The Chancellor will deliver his first Budget on Wednesday. It is reported the minimum wage will increase by nearly 4%.
This will mean so much to some of the lowest paid in our country. Under Labour work will pay.
Labour is for working people.

EXCLUSIVE🚨: I’m told Newcastle United will not entertain any compensation offers for Eddie Howe until Manchester United complete the outstanding payments on the £20m fee agreed for Dan Ashworth in 2024.

When people say “this isn’t Man United”, what they’re really saying is that it isn’t Fergie’s Man United. They’ve been shit now for 13 years since he left and they were shit for 25 years before he joined
Table already looking a bit rough for us. Early I know but I can only go what my eyes see when it comes to us. #nufc

Quite possibly the worst #nufc team this since the Steve Bruce days. Slow and pedestrian across the pitch each match…
No bite.
No leadership.
No goalscorers.
No passion.
This job is too big for this manager. We are in big trouble and the club has brought this on itself. Forget new badges, new songs, self service bars, new clobber every 5 minutes, get the team sorted out before it’s too late!
What a state we are in. Knew it was going to be tough this season but it’s way worse than that. I’m seeing zero improvement. #nufc
Has to sort the middle of the pitch. It just isn’t working. Over ran every single game. #nufc
