Thanks to @susanabulhawa for speaking to me about what the olive tree means to Palestinians, and the violent contradiction at the heart of Israel’s claim to belong to a land whose trees it destroys and whose people it attacks. "You don't cut down a blessing."
…destruction contradicts claims of belonging… “No one native to that region would ever cut down, would not have the heart to cut down an olive tree,” ~ Susan Abulhawa Colin Sheridan Irish Examiner ☕️🥐

Interesting difference in the commentator language to Cesc here Commentator - “you are well drilled” Cesc - “we play with freedom” This seems counterintuitive. However you can take a “train with intent, play with freedom” approach. Maybe that’s what is going on. Well drilled in the eyes of outsiders can sometimes actually mean there was no “drilling” at all. They are connected. A team plays together for long enough, is allowed to self organise between themselves (even when a new player comes in as would happen in pro game) will eventually look smooth and playing in flow. The language drilled can be deceiving though. Of course the coach leads, being vision, drives principles, will have some rules. But within that necessary guidance the players have to be able to play together and build on field connections. One advantage Cesc/Como has in this particular parallel universe to Man U is - space and reasonable expectations.

I feel like we need a term to describe this mobility centric, timing oriented, relationship based approach to football.

We’ve had better players and bigger stars, but not many have been as interesting. James McClean is a good person. And his book (with Daniel McDonnell) is absolutely superb.

I don’t usually join panels, but given the news and my presence on the ground, I was asked to weigh in. Here’s my response to a panelist who appeared to be defending Vladimir Putin amid Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine: “Do you want to save Ukrainian civilian lives, or would you rather hinder and kneecap what’s supposed to be your ally in its fight for survival against Russia? That’s simply what it comes down to now.”
