Enough with the bleak local politics for a minute. Very excited to share that pre-proofs are out for our JDE article, “Local and Spillover Effects of Trade on Structural Transformation: Evidence from Brazil,” with @JosecoronadoAr and @GuilhermeKlei11. Thread below. 1/9

How bad is administrative bloat in higher ed? At MIT, the “student body has grown by 8% and its faculty by 9% since the mid-1980s. By comparison, the tally of administrators jumped by 189%.”

Replying to @florianederer
@florianederer asks a fair question, but the counterfactual is unobservable, b/c nobody publishes rejection letters (unless Florian is asking authors to share those). What we can observe is impact. So here’s a different test. 🧵 1/
Heterodox economists claim that they're systematically shut out of top econ journals. So I have a genuine question: What are the best recent heterodox papers that deserved publication in a top journal but were rejected? @IsabellaMWeber @devikadutt @DanielaGabor

Micro has widened its circle to incorporate game theory, evolutionary dynamics, etc. over the last few decades. The increasing openness to ideas coming from areas outside of neoclassical economics has been especially characteristic of applied micro. Macro theory, which used to be perceived as the more accommodating half of economics, by contrast, has become increasingly closed off to anything outside of fully optimized rational agent models (in single and heterogeneous agent varieties). In my own area of international economics, using the models incorporated in the Asbjorn Rodseth’s 2000 textbook would render a paper unfit for publication today. It would be hard for someone like Lance Taylor to publish a paper in the JIE or JDE (let alone to serve as an editor of the latter, as he did back then).

Could not agree more … there’s a sort of empty moralism/self-righteousness in the attitude against AI written docs.
I keep seeing people run all sorts of documents through Pangram and get outraged when they come back as AI-positive. I feel like I’m starting to lose sight of what we’re trying to achieve here. Is the outrage always warranted? 1/

This!! I recently got a report that was clearly AI-edited and written for the most part. But the report was superb. Critical. But points well justified. And look, I got a rejection, so this is not simple bias from positive feedback. I think using AI like that is good and welcome.
Replying to @BarbaraBiasi
2. The report is actually NOT AI slop: it reads well and makes good points. But then does it matter whether it’s AI-written or not? The goal of a report is to make a paper better. Is that goal defeated if the report is excellent but has some AI in it? 3/

Two new papers show that wealth taxes lead to very little out-migration by the wealthy, while increasing tax revenue. Most think wealth taxes always make the wealthy flee , an exodus -- but there is no existing empirical evidence for such an exodus, anywhere, at any time 1/n
The Norwegian example is illustrative. In the last few years, our wealth tax received massive media attention, described by media outlets as leading to an "exodus" of the wealthy. But only ~1.7% of the ultra-wealthy actually left. Tax revenue boomed
