If you really know what Messi went through for Argentina and Barcelona, you’d be begging God to give him more than two world cups.
His own country booed him. They insulted him, cursed him, and even dragged his family through the mud when Argentina fell short. They made the greatest player they had ever produced feel like he wasn’t enough.
Then he finally gave them everything: the Copa América, the Finalissima, and the World Cup.
And somehow, that still isn’t enough for some people.
As a Barcelona fan, I love Barça with all my heart. But loving Barcelona doesn’t mean I have to support Spain over Messi. This is the same Messi who carried Barcelona through some of the club’s darkest years, sacrificed everything, and gave us memories no fan will ever forget. Yet after he left, some people shamelessly blamed him for Barcelona’s financial crisis, as if one man created it. Others rushed to compare a teenager to the greatest player in our history, forgetting that every young Barça player dreams of leaving even a fraction of Messi’s legacy. That’s disrespect, not appreciation.
So if Argentina and Spain meet in one World Cup final, I’ll support Messi. If they meet in seven World Cup finals, I’ll still support Messi seven times. Because loyalty isn’t about flags. Sometimes it’s about standing by the man who gave everything to the game, even when the game and the people around it didn’t always stand by him.
For everything Messi has endured, one World Cup never felt enough. Two feels closer to justice.
