Yesterday during a class break I heard an Alg II Honors student making comments about how "stupid" she is. (This is a S who aces almost every assessment.) I'd heard her say similar things offhandedly in the past, but I decided I needed to address it directly. 1/6 #iteachmath

Just a Grade 9 demonstrating how important it is to give students opportunities to think about math and not just mimic it✌️

Equitable and inclusive assessment doesn’t lower the bar, it ELEVATES it. It’s just a shift in perspective: Offer choice ➡️ expect high-quality work Triangulate assessment ➡️ increase data validity Give re-tests ➡️ demand proficiency Equity and excellence go hand in hand. – at Toronto, Ontario

This is where I am too. If we don't impact instruction, assessing/grading the (often pale) information we get is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. I just need a system that keeps students present in the mathematics with me, not gazing at an endpoint.
Lukewarm take: SBG is fine, but I'd rather spend my mental energy on instruction and getting the Ss thinking, and not spend it on minutia of assigning grades. I'd much rather be assessing the Ss and immediately reading & reacting instead of trying to catalog every little change.

I’m trying to develop a collection of “low floor, high ceiling” tasks - they don’t have to be curricular focused - to allow ALL students to engage and build community. Go! Please feel free to share. #mtbos

Do you have a class period you need to breath some life into? 10 minutes with one of these @Desmos polygraphs by Joe Kazemi followed by a math-specific one to whatever you are currently teaching is a solid combo #mtbos #iteachmath teacher.desmos.com/collectio…

I felt like my calculus students needed a break today, so we played @Desmos Escape Rooms by @mrchowmath. If you haven't tried them, they're AWESOME! (and free and require no prep work!) mrchowmath.com/breakout.html

expectations. These smaller groups only have access to their jamboard. I watch the jamboards closely and manage the flow as best as I can without hearing. I might write on board without joining breakout group OR join and have a conversation. Documenting O and C along the way.
This is me as well Allison. I would add that this week (at the end of my course) I have given comprehensive tasks on a strand each day. The group size this week has been 2-3 ( as opposed to the 4-5 Peter suggests online) to allow me to assess S’s comprehension of the course...1/2

Loving @Desmos for both in-person and online teaching. Works especially well when you have to suddenly take your lesson online in an afternoon's notice. 😆
