OK, I'll bite. If John Cassavetes is so insanely influential and brilliant, why have I not heard about him until recently?
I've been on a side-quest with classic and esoteric movies, mostly through the Criterion collection. I've watched dozens of Criterion closet picks from filmmakers and actors I admire.
They pick Cassavetes films ALL THE TIME. Probably more than any other director except Scorsese. I haven't seen a single Cassavetes film. I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about a Cassavetes film outside of those videos.
I'm not a slouch on film, I've got a pretty wide spread on what I've seen & what I appreciate. How has Cassavetes slipped through that net so completely for so long?
people are allowed to make art that is lame. nobody is required to make things that are good if they're enjoying what they're doing

re: Ebert occasionally "missing" on a great movie, I think people forget that the point of criticizing art is not to be "correct," it's to engage with the work sincerely; a critic should be evaluated less on "correctness" and more the consistency/depth of their work

The author is dead! (Crowd cheers) But the author function lives on (crowd boos) Rather than attributing the text to a single origin point, we as critics must map the complex web of institutions and power relations that constitute "authorship" (crowd yawns, disperses)

Damn, all Canadian too, except for Caught by the Tides. The golden age of Canadian content has begun.

With the popularity of Nathan Fielder, Nirvanna The Band The Show, and Blue Heron, I wonder if the movie of the moment is a new "Kiarostami wave" where filmmakers foreground the interplay of fiction vs. reality in our AI era. The Shrouds and Caught by the Tides are other examples
