Really pleased that my colleague Lauren Edwards is reintroducing the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. Terminally ill people deserve to have choice at the end of life, and I’m so pleased that Parliament will now have the ability to make a final decision on this Bill.

NEW: The Assisted Dying Bill is returning to Parliament this week. Labour MP Lauren Edwards will reintroduce it on Wednesday after coming 2nd in the private members’ ballot. “The process has been frustrated by a small minority”, she argues.

Breaking: Right to Life's numbers show a massive majority in favour of assisted dying in the Lords ✅
❌MPs are repeating a fiction this afternoon, claiming a few Peers blocked the assisted suicide Bill. Nearly 150 Peers actively opposed it, including leading medical, disability & legal experts. Having paid little attention to Lords' scrutiny, they've bought into a myth.

“This is so out of step with what normally happens, it feels quite clear to me that the intention is to delay or block the bill. “I think it’s outrageous that a small group of people in the Lords is doing this.” Thw words of Hannah Slater, who has breast cancer that has spread to her brain.

I was one of 291 MPs to vote against the assisted dying bill at its final stage in the Commons; I still have concerns about it. But the idea that the House of Lords could block it by ‘talking it out’ is wrong. This is not a democratic way to deal with big questions like this.
EXC - Senior backers of the assisted dying bill now believe it will fall in the House of Lords. It's causing fury among MPs who backed it. Opponents say this is routine for private members bills and supporters should not have misled public on bill's chances.

MPs and Peers - from both sides of the debate - are recognising that some Peers are risking the reputation of the House by by continuing to delay progress. The people and MPs have spoken. It’s time to legalise assisted dying.
I don’t support the Assisted Dying Bill and voted against it, but it is not right for the unelected chamber to block the commons.

Community notes on assisted dying content are nothing but a confirmation bias engine for opponents . One quick Google proves @HarrietHarman is right. "Most Britons support assisted dying in both principle and practice" @YouGov #YesToDignity
Public opinion is in favour of Assisted Dying Bill. It seems too that a majority of peers want Assisted Dying Bill to be thoroughly scrutinised and then get sent back to Commons. It is therefore not “The Lords” which is blocking the Bill, but a minority of peers who are frustrating the will of the majority of peers, public opinion & The Commons by filibustering .
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
No evidence that public supports this bill. in fact, strong evidence that while they might support AD in principle, they oppose this bill. There is also no evidence that peers support the bill. static1.squarespace.com/static/63725a1…

No amount of shouting at people who support assisted dying life will change the facts. This Bill has overwhelming public support and did so before, during, and after the Bill's progress through the Commons. yougov.co.uk/health/articles…

Today the Lords start the process of debating over 900 amendments (579 of which laid by just 7 peers) to the assisted dying Bill. As they do, lets hope they have people like Ed front of mind. #YesToDignity

"Do not risk our legitimacy by claiming that we know better than both the public and the other place" Lord Carey warns the Bishops Bench and the House of Lords about the profound consequences of rejecting a Bill with such a strong democratic mandate.

After intense scrutiny in the Commons, the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill now proceeds to the House of Lords. This is an important part of the passage of the bill and I’m very grateful for the engagement so far from peers #ChoiceAtTheEndOfLife thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…

"Assisted dying gives terminally ill people that choice to die on their terms." As Clinical Lead for the implementation of Voluntary Assisted Dying in New South Wales, Dr Wade Stedman sees first-hand the difference a compassionate law makes to dying people and their families.

NEW: The government has announced that this session of parliament will last until spring 2026. Among other things, that means that the assisted dying bill has another 7-8 months to complete its passage through the Lords, increasingly the likelihood of it becoming law.
