Precision drift. LLMs are increasingly good at inferring intent. We become less precise when we ask / specify. Does precision become a "machine thing"?

I’ve been seeing more errors in articles and papers recently. Garbled text, sentences that appear out of place. It would be easy to blame AI, but I think it is humans editing AI. So, I’m guessing that the way this goes is: people will just stop reading "published" text. Maybe they'll ask AI what it means, maybe not. In any case, it seems like a collapse. If humans didn’t write it, humans won’t read it.

AI-based code generation has risks. We can sidestep this issue and use it to help us understand code. Here I describe a technique I use called lensing - forming conceptualizations of system responsibilities at several scales. open.substack.com/pub/michae…

Is 2024 the year that you really wrangle that old code and start doing something new with it? @martinfowler has a good post on finding seams (with shout out to @mfeathers) in your legacy code to better support tests, and more. martinfowler.com/bliki/Legac…
