Notable use of the phrase "talent cultivation" 人才培育, a phrase at the core of PRC education policy and so highlighting how parts of Australian higher education are being socialised and integrated into the PRC system.
Australia: Australian tertiary education sinks deeper.

From #Taiwan to #Tasmania! Deputy Director Lennon joined Taiwan partners in sending off PARAFANG, a traditional #Amis bamboo sailing raft, ahead of its journey to the #AustralianWoodenBoatFestival, in #Hobart, Tasmania, from 5-8 Feb 2027.
From @DesmondShum, on China disrupting LNG supply to Taiwan and smashing the global economy.
Australia is Taiwan's largest energy supplier, mostly LNG, so uniquely exposed to risk. And Taiwan has countermeasure options.
Every scenario converges on century-scale disaster.
China’s Taiwan Chokepoint: A Nightmare for Global Markets
Here’s my biggest takeaway from a conference I just attended in New York. More than a takeaway, it’s a scenario that genuinely spooked me.

The flip-side being how those trained in maths or physics overestimate how they personally understand the world, e.g. those scientists confidently explaining all of China after they went to a conference and visited a shopping mall in Shanghai.
If you’re trained in math or physics, you’re often prone to overestimate how well-understood the world is. You assume most things have been “worked out” mathematically to a far greater degree than they have been.
It can be shocking and slightly horrifying to realize how much of the world runs on vibes and rules of thumb. It seems impossible that things could keep running at all with so little theory.
This is the first step on the road to Hayekian wisdom, to realizing that most of the knowledge that runs the world exists in no individual human mind but rather in the interactions between them.

Aesthetics aside, a few thoughts about Rubio’s speech.
It was a doctrinal speech. Rubio re-founds the transatlantic alliance on shared civilisational descent rather than shared values, rules or a shared threat, and makes the US commitment to Europe implicitly conditional on Europe "reawakening" on those terms.

Pro-Beijing propagandists insisting that Uyghur dancing at Starbucks in Xinjiang promoted on social media is an authentic display of Uyghur cultural identity and not a dystopian subjugation by party-state power and global capital to serve both profit and party ideology.
"We oppose your invasion but we won't help you" is a position on Ukraine from @DavidShoebridge that is the definition of unprincipled and which parallels his position on Taiwan.
Reminder of how far the @Greens and their new leader @DavidShoebridge have to go to be at all credible on regional security.
At an anti-AUKUS public event in Sydney, a good question about China's threat to Taiwan, a response from @DavidShoebridge that starts as uncomprehending and descends into the bizarre.
Disappointing in 2026 to still not be platforming Taiwanese or Taiwanese-Australian voices at these sort of events.

Discussion between @SamRoggeveen and Hugh White, who insist on seeing Taiwan as a territory over which the US and China will fight, so are unable to conceptualise a China-Taiwan war and its total and direct consequences for Australia.
