As a company from eastern Germany, we know that building a wall to try and keep people from leaving isn't a good idea.

"Had just these two specific items not increased in price over the past year, Canada’s inflation rate would have been close to normal..."
What's driving Canada's high inflation rate? The answer, it turns out, is simpler than you think.

Thanks @michaelstepner great to see these consumption patterns hold in a side by side view. Individual income is a powerful predictor of not just spending trends but also income and balance trends during COVID.

Replying to @bhboehlert @causalinf
When studying consumption responses, yes. We don't have individual-level consumption data, and study ZIP-level heterogeneity. But JPMCI have individual income and find the same pattern: jpmorganchase.com/content/da…

Short advice thread for budding economists applying now for predocs
TLDR: Being a predoc is/should be a major human capital investment that you and your PI will make together.
Look for someone who will invest in you rather than simply someone who is a big name. cc @econ_ra

Me: That's awesome! It's about time we expanded our mental health services. So hard for our BIPOC patients to access.
FH: lol we can't do that. We'd lose way too much money.

📊New research by @OppInsights Research Principal @michaelstepner appears in the New York Times today.
Using real-time banking data, @michaelstepner and his coauthors find that the vast majority of people who lost pandemic UI benefits in June did not find new jobs by early Aug.
26 states (all but 1 led by GOP governors) have tried to end or reduce expanded federal unemployment benefits. They argue doing so will bring ppl back to the work and boost their economies.
Has it worked? New research suggests the answer is mostly "no."
