Domestic drama production is declining by approximately 30% over the past 2 years. 12 organizations related to drama broadcast have urged the government and the National Assembly to establish a mid-to-long term investment and support system worth 1 trillion won to restore the production.
In 2022, total drama production is 141. Drama programming on the 3 major terrestrial broadcaster (KBS, SBS, MBC) also dropped from 91 titles in 2012, to 32 titles in 2023. Rising production costs, reduced investment, scheduling, difficulties to secure IP, are named as the cause.
Organizations expressed that the decreased number of production affect the jobs reduction and creative opportunitites. "A rookie writer's second work, a supporting actor's first lead role, and assistant staff's directorial debut were only possible in an environment where works were consistently produced. Once the production foundation collapsed, it will be very difficult to restore."
