Sometimes, the Best Reward You Can Give Employees Is Time.
On Friday, I posted on X that my employer had allowed us to knock off at 1 p.m. and even bought us vouchers for a massage.
Some people found it amusing because, well, I am the employer. 😂
But there is an important leadership lesson behind that post.
Over the past few weeks, my team at Hito HR has been exceptionally busy managing demanding client projects, including executive recruitment assignments, while also assisting with registrations and delegate queries for the IPM Namibia Annual Conference.
I saw the long hours, the pressure and the commitment. And I felt it was important to give them a few hours to rest and recharge.
One of the most underrated leadership skills is the ability to PAY ATTENTION.
Interestingly, I learned this from a manager who once managed me. Whenever we worked exceptionally long hours, she would sometimes allow us to report at 9 a.m. instead of 7:30 a.m.
It was a small gesture, but years later, I still remember it.
As an HR Consultant working with organisations across Namibia, one of the recurring challenges I observe is excessive workloads. Employees are stretched, overwhelmed and sometimes expected to do the work of several people.
We cannot continuously overload employees and expect wellness programmes to solve the problem.
When employees join Hito HR, I explain the meaning behind our name. Hito is a Japanese word meaning "person" or "people." I was inspired by an article about Japanese work culture, where I came across the term karoshi, meaning "death by overwork."
Our name reminds us that people must always come first and that hard work should never come at the expense of our health.
Another lesson from the recently concluded IPM Namibia Annual Conference was that leaders must model the behaviours they expect from employees.
With Millennials and Gen Z increasingly shaping our workplaces, employees are not only listening to what we say. They are watching what we do.
We cannot encourage employees to take leave, rest and prioritise their well-being while we never do the same.
Of course, not every organisation can afford massage vouchers or early Fridays. But every leader can find ways to acknowledge extraordinary effort.
Sometimes, it is allowing employees to report a little later, reviewing workloads or simply giving them time to recover.
Employee wellness is not only about policies and wellness days. It is about the everyday decisions we make as leaders.
The way we lead people today can influence how they lead others tomorrow.
Good leadership is not only knowing when to push your team. It is also knowing when they have given enough.
Sometimes, leadership is simply saying:
"I have seen how hard you have worked. Go home and rest."
That, too, is leadership.

I don't know why people find this wild. This what leaders should do. I learnt this from my previous leaders. It's about knowing when your team needs a break.
We shouldn't work people to death.
