Congratulations to @AlvinTedjo. Mississauga's new mayor and a generational for a great city in need of fresh ideas and leadership. (But, I must point out that it was @Karen_Ras905 who beat him in his first race for council... just saying 😉)

When you hear all these anti-Ukraine voices on X that sound so loud and claim to speak for lots of Americans they actually speak for 3% overall and 5% of MAGA. To put that in perspective 12% think the moon landing was faked and 13% believe in Big Foot. So they’re even more fringe. Ignore them.

The fact Canada responded to the external crisis foisted upon us, not with polarization and upheaval but with centrist, reasonable governments across the board, is pretty great. Manitoba is now the most left wing and Alberta is the most right wing and they both lean into the centre more than the extremes on policy preferences (this will be even more true now that we are post-referendum, where the Alberta electorate clearly expressed a preference for centrism).

A lot of the recent drama on the right in BC came from a crazy right populist splinter party, @One_BCHQ. Made up of self styled “real conservatives” with the usual assortment of weird obsessions & conspiracy theories: vaccines, ostrich farms, chem trails, xenophobia, MAGA North, all communicated with the volume nob stuck on 10. Basically the BC counterpart of hard core Alberta separatist activists, or Bernier’s @peoplespca. Tonight they’re at 1.4% of the vote, after two years of being a hugely divisive distraction on the right of BC politics. Yet another reminder to Conservative parties: ignore the crazy fringe of the hard populist right. Don’t let the tail wag the dog. Let them stay in their little fringe parties. Being a principled conservative party does not mean pandering to incoherent, perennially angry populism. Instead, propose bold, thoughtful policy reforms rooted in conservative principles that appeal to the broad mainstream. Just like the @Conservative_BC did in this winning campaign.

I must say that I’m more invested in the success of the incoming Doerkson government than I’ve been in any goverment in nearly a decade. What interests me most is the potential fecundity of the premier-elect’s back-to-basics, normie conservatism. Doerkson isn’t offering political dopamine. His whole pitch is about competent government, economic growth, and public institutions that fulfill their basic purposes. The magnitude of his victory is a sign of how broadly that proposition can appeal. The story, in a nutshell, is a guy from Williams Lake offered a recognizable conservatism that could win in Vancouver-Yaletown. His temperament helped bring together rural communities, suburban families, and urban voters around some straightforward expectations about how their province should work. Schools should teach. The justice system should protect the public. Hospitals should treat patients. The civil service should deliver services competently and impartially. These institutions have important yet bounded missions. They should discharge them effectively and resist the temptation to become vehicles for every passing political or ideological cause. The same practical instinct should guide economic policy: make it possible to build homes, grow businesses, develop resources, and attract investment. Give people reasons to believe that hard work and initiative can produce a better life here. This is the politics of normalcy in practice. And even if its rhetoric is moderate, its ambitions are considerable. Restoring focus and competence to institutions that have lost them will require conviction, persistence, and capable people. That’s another reason for optimism: the quality of the candidates and potential front bench, along with the talented people Doerkson’s leadership drew to the campaign. @gavindew is someone to watch in particular. His interest in both economic growth and making government more productive—including through AI—could make him an important contributor to this governing agenda. The test now is governing. There will be hard choices and inevitable disappointments along the way. But this is a conservatism that I want to see succeed—and an unusually promising opportunity to show what it can accomplish.

Putin on Ukraine: The lands lost by Kyiv are not "their territory"; they are historically Russian lands.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Kyiv predates Moscow by centuries, and southern/eastern Ukraine was ruled by the Cossack Hetmanate and Crimean Khanate long before 18th-century Russian Imperial annexation. In 1991, every Ukrainian region voted overwhelmingly for independence, recognized by Russia 1994. britannica.com/place/Ukraine/… treaties.un.org/Pages/showDeta…

I'm getting sick and tired of these Putin apologists acting like the war in Ukraine is some kind of natural disaster that Putin just found himself in and that Ukraine wants to perpetuate. Putin started the war. Russia invaded Ukraine. Ukraine wants to be free. How is this difficult?

Ukraine has developed a ballistic missile capable of striking Moscow. Obviously I'd love to see one slam into the Kremlin for pure symbolism. That aside, I hope they target every power plant servicing the capital. Let's see how those bastards cope.
Russia has begun large-scale strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure ahead of winter, Russian military chief Valery Gerasimov told Putin. The statement came five days after Trump claimed Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an "energy ceasefire." On Saturday, Vinnytsia was left without power following a Russian attack. hromadske.ua/en/war/272670-r…

"Single biggest obstacle to peace"? Thats some crazy rewriting of history ...
Zelensky is the single biggest obstacle to achieving peace in the Ukraine. Once everyone realizes that, this war will end and people of that region of the world can start rebuilding their lives.
