It it just me or is the Doomsday Clock running a bit slow?

The Doomsday Clock reads 89 secs to midnight — the closest ever
Born in 1947 to assess risk of nuclear Armageddon, it now tracks climate and other existential risks too
But clocks can be wound back, and we need to do this NOW

If you think tides are high in Southern California now, just wait until king tides arrive from November to January.
LA and San Diego just saw their highest tides on record Tuesday, but the Christmas Eve king tide will likely run about half a foot higher, and that's without a storm. Add a storm and water levels could break yesterday's record by 1-2 feet. Then, factor in potentially large surf, and that's why we're very concerned about severe coastal flooding and erosion on California's coast this winter.

Freedom to speak. Freedom to vote. Freedom to live. These basic liberties were blatantly violated by irresponsible and self-centered tech billionaires this month.

I just noticed 'Climate' got demoted from the top bar on the BBC News website. Next to Science, so presumably equally unimportant compared to InDepth and BBC Verify.
This is fine.
'Permafrost detachment slides' is my learn something new for today. (Where permafrost warms and thaws at its base). Go science!
In an ominous development, a new form of landslide - carrying blocks the size of two-storey houses - is hitting Canada as permafrost melts. Studies suggest they are connected with wildfires and that they could be unprecedented in 10,000 years.

North Korea putting on a finishing clinic at the Women's U17 World Cup against the hosts and progressing to the quarter finals. They will face either Spain or USA.
Two ways of looking at this:
The Polar Vortex is now forecast to split in early November, with a high chance of an official Stratospheric Warming event with a wind reversal around November 4.
That would make this the earliest Sudden Stratospheric Warming on record, by more than 3 weeks. In our latest analysis, we look at how the event is forecast to unfold, along with early thoughts on potential weather impacts and how another such event is currently trending for mid-winter 2026/2027.

Great read, especially for #economists
It is 20 years since the landmark Stern review of the economics of climate change. Why have we still failed to learn the lessons? Come on, economists, catch up!

If the UK gets a Beast from the East at the end of November and before Christmas - there's a high chance this will be the science behind the why.

Yesterday (Oct. 26) marked the 150th consecutive day that the Niño 3.4 sea surface temperature set a new record daily high, at 30.22°C (preliminary).
This was more than 1.13°C above the previous record daily high set in 2015, as well as a record 3.49°C above the 1991-2020 baseline.
I prefer to think of it as a complicated 6L V-8 engine into which we're chucking ball bearings. Nobody knows which bit will break first but once it does it'll be cheaper to replace the whole engine.
But there is no replacement engine.

Tipping points don't queue politely. Cross one - like Greenland Ice-Sheet collapse - and it can shove others over in a domino cascade
The climate isn't separate switches - it's a web

China: Scientists have identified the first surface rupture from the 22 October magnitude 7.0 Baqên earthquake in Tibet, about 15 km east of the epicentre.
The fault produced around 3.5 metres of vertical displacement, with up to 0.9 metres of left-lateral movement locally.
Investigators also found sand liquefaction and ground fissures. The earthquake was caused primarily by normal faulting as the crust stretched.
