More than 15 years ago, Joshua Boger helped shape MassChallenge in its earliest days, including as our inaugural board chair. In 2011, MassChallenge brought Joshua together with Leonide Saad, founder of @alkeuspharma. Joshua later became the company's executive chairman. This September, Alkeus was acquired in a deal valued at up to $800 million. Now, that story is coming full circle. Amy and Joshua Boger have made a $2 million founding gift to establish the MC Innovation Fund, giving MassChallenge dedicated resources to pursue growth and new initiatives. It's a remarkable investment in what comes next, and an invitation for others to join them. We're deeply grateful to Amy and Joshua for their generosity and longstanding belief in MassChallenge. This is why I moved to Texas
The Texas Triangle will see the biggest economic expansion in the US over the next ten years. Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio. Nothing else groups like this: - low cost of living - high quality of life - ample and relatively cheap land - no state income tax - central location - good weather - diverse economies - business and regulatory friendly - good education & healthcare - Giga Texas + Terafab + Bastrop The suburban and rural areas will also benefit massively from technological and cultural shifts: - work from anywhere - self driving cars, no traffic - transportation: drones, flying cars - food delivery improvements (not just TexMex and BBQ anymore) - AR/VR/AI in education - decreasing social isolation - influx of talent and high-caliber people - patriotic, pro-American, homogenous culture & values

Love this!
Austin is becoming one of the most important job engines in the country. It doesn’t yet have the scale of a NYC, DFW, or Houston, but the combo of growth rate plus absolute jobs added is next level.

Well said @seobrien! Having grown up in the Quad Cities (IA/IL) this is spot on. The Middle Corridor has a unique opportunity to build something new, impactful, and playing to its strengths for entrepreneurs. I'm an Austinite but still speak Midwest. 😂

Heard today in a high school startup incubator orientation, the most refreshing observation. "Our AP students, the so-called smarter kids, who are used to knowing the material, tend to struggle more in these classes. There are no right answers." Part of me wanted to weep with joy at feeling seen. Another part of me needed to thank them, for starting to personalize education. Yet another side of me, felt hope, that society is getting it. People are NOT standards. We can't teach people as though they are. And in Entrepreneurship in particular, almost everything taught is wrong, because there is no right answer.

Austin continues to punch above our weight in tech talent. CBRE put us 5th, even though we’re 16th in absolute volume. Its driven by concertation, avg salary, brain gain & quality. Behind only SF, Seattle, Toronto & NYC. Imagine what happens when the weight catches up. 🤠🚀🦾

30 funds have raised 36% of all VC and now lead 34% of seed rounds by value. We talk about capital concentrating at the top but it's actually concentrating all the way down. PitchBook compared the Top 30 VC firms to the rest of the market at seed. (Top 30 by performance, not size, although there's heavy overlap.) These firms aren't just raising an outsized share of capital or dominating the biggest growth rounds. They're dramatically changing the dynamics at seed. The median seed round led by a Top 30 firm was historically 2x the size of overall median. This year, it's 3x. That changes pricing, runway, and how big a swing a company can take. But the bigger question is what flows from here. Is it a given that the top Series A companies will increasingly come from the top seed cohorts? Or will performance reshuffle the deck between rounds? There used to be real concern about adverse selection when a top fund invested at seed and then didn't follow on. But that was when these firms participated in ~5% of the market five years ago, not the estimated ~15% today. It will be interesting to see whether the winners at seed naturally graduate to become the winners at A and the market bifurcates further. Or if the market resets between rounds, leaving a much larger pool of companies with an even higher bar to clear given the expectations that come with brand and access to capital. Which are you seeing at A right now?

Truth 🎯
“The lifestyle of  an entrepreneur  at its core is:  I can take more pain than the other guy, and I'll prove it.” “ There's a zen that can happen when a warrior has fought for a long time. You can get used to it.” “ You almost start accepting it. Like, something bad happens and you don't even get mad.” “ There are benefits.  But you need to make sure you don't get so used to it that it doesn't even bother you. You can get so zen, you're unbothered.” “ There's something special about the extra fierceness of being bothered, being upset about something that is wrong.” — @travisk
