Picture that. The important nuance is that we’re talking about this order of shift because they’re estimating capturing a percentage of labor spend, unlike historic SaaS arguing for IT budget.

The Railway security breach and outage have been a crash course in how NOT to handle outages: - No status updates for an ENTIRE day - Eventually they get their act together and start doing token updates every 45 minutes but without a resolution ETA - Then they share an expected resolution time and proceed to blow past it with a flippant opaque status update afterwards - Then they post an engineer’s name in the status updates “don’t be alarmed if you see his name in your logs” lol - Eventually at the end of the day they announce it’s a security breach and that you need to rotate all keys - except all deployments are blocked!!! - A haphazard security email goes out another 4 hours later with typos, unfinished sentences… Having handled major outages before it’s clear they’re scrambling internally, and the quality of handling the situation speaks to the likely quality of the organization and the product - not much to trust for an infra provider, unfortunately.

The Wright brothers flew in 1903. Five years later, people still thought they were bluffing. Then Wilbur flew around a racetrack in France. Less than two minutes in the air turned skeptics into believers. The art of a product demo publicity stunt.

Showtime. Ghost in the Shell is now on the streets of Lisbon. A graffiti AI project that tracks trends from a street corner for the community by the community. A couple of optimizations: Removed the eink display since it’s redundant to using the QR code to communicate with Ghost. Now it should be able to stay alive for months before accounting for solar. See more at ghostintheshell.art
I made this weird idea I find interesting: What if a random street corner had intelligence and memory? A year ago I built v1 of Ghost in the Shell, a self-contained AI “spirit” of a place. Solar powered. Internet connected. Stick it somewhere and it lives there. The first version was interesting, but it was missing something: it couldn’t actually experience the place it inhabited. So I came back to it a year later and gave it eyes. Every so often, it wakes up, looks around, and takes a photo. Those observations become its memories. Scan the QR code and you can talk to the ghost of that place. Ask it what’s changed. What happened yesterday. What it keeps seeing. What’s interesting lately. Basically: a public-facing camera you don’t watch, you talk to its memory. First ghost hits the streets of Lisbon this week. ghostintheshell.art

Today’s 3D printed watch complication exploration - a flying tourbillon. This one gets about a minute of time keeping. Really makes you appreciate the achievement that multi-day mechanical watches are.

Let’s keep zooming out - here are shared pictographs between Latin and Mandarin. Do you see what I see?
And just in case you want to zoom out, here’s the entire Latin alphabet back to its pictographs.

The Phoenician letter for an ox or head of cattle is Aleph (𐤀), which directly evolved into the modern Latin letter A. So fucking cool. Did you have any idea that there’s a relationship to the Bull and the letter A??

Wild. I was able to make an app to instantly create models of anything I take pictures of and 3d print it. Now to take pictures of something broken and reprint it…

I’ve been experimenting with the Ray-Ban Meta glasses as an AI enabled context device to get a sense of what we can expect on the near future. Here’s what I’ve learned so far: I had codex build me a custom iPhone app to get around meta’s limitations. It’s connected to ChatGPT and uses my own custom wake word to get around iPhone lock screen limitations. My favorite uses have been on demand image capture of design inspo that automatically gets saved to an inspo folder. On demand meal macro tracking with snapshot. It’s connected to my whoop so I get audio based heart rate and pace alerts when running. Quick AI driven answers without needing to take my phone out. Since it’s not part of the iPhone ecosystem it’s a bit glued together, but as long as you can bypass lock screen with a wake word, it’s very compelling to have camera + audio + AI without needing to take your phone out.

What if your phone had a calm e-ink sidekick based on the original essential iPhone feature set: calendar, messages, maps, music, browser. A long-lasting, affordable device you can take instead of your phone when you want capability without the noise. Something like this…
