Owen Jones has, for the last three years, revealed himself to be a man of enormous courage, integrity and truthfulness. No one should think for a minute that his relentless defence of Palestinian rights and historical truth is easy or comes without heavy personal costs. Throughout the genocide in Gaza, Jones remained a tireless bur rigorous and supremely decent voice. I suspect part of what initially moved him was the strong displeasure in being treated like an idiot by the official propaganda – a noble motive in itself – but there is no question he has been genuinely touched by the images of suffering arriving daily from Gaza. And yet, how does his intellectual fixation on a battle between left and right help us understand the horrors of Gaza, or move us to stop them? My impression is that the opposite has happened. People look at what is happening in Gaza and ask themselves what a person on the right or on the left should think. In many cases this is ideology. In most, simply careerism and group association. Jones shows how limited the perspective really is. How about, like the author himself, asking how a human being should feel? How about returning to the world of facts and feelings rather than our endless Marvel franchise? newstatesman.com/culture/boo…

Saving the planet with these eco friendly lampposts. Blinding squirrels and songbirds and keeping hedgehogs and dog walkers in complete darkness. Well done all.

Good to see the appropriate language deployed correctly.
I hope that daft cunt gets both her dachshund and cat taken away from her. You don’t deserve a fucking animal let alone two. You need a fucking factory reset. Give your animals to someone who wants them and get some much needed help you sick fuck.

I doubt a council that struggles to issue a parking permit is really up to solving the most intractable crisis in the Middle East. xitter.cf/hoffman_noa/status/211…

GP’s apps are increasingly bizarre. “What do you want to know about your test results?” Where to begin….

At a fancy new docs surgery. So new they’ve obviously not put the sound proofing in yet. Even with my terrible hearing I can hear someone’s private consultation. I call that shabby.

I'd say the people who didn't get killed in a plane crash were the chief beneficiaries but The Independent has a different view.

I think about Blast from the Past every day. I love him. He deserves all the gongs. (Although I can’t watch this again, it’s too devastating)

I watched the first episode of Jonathan Meades' 'Abroad in Britain' last night, and thought pretty much straight away, why is the BBC no longer capable of making programming like this? It's 36 years old, but still whips along beautifully in its editing, music and 'Meades'

I never met Jason Arday, and know nothing about him beyond what I have read, seen and heard in the media. As the debate around him raged in recent weeks, I stayed out of it, precisely because it struck me as one of those occasional frenzies in which facts get lost and humans cease to be treated as humans. I now wish I had reached out to him, tried to encourage him that “this too shall pass.” Many people today, those who knew him above all but also many like me who didn’t, will be feeling sadness and anger that this has all led to his death, a family suddenly without a father, parents without a son. None of us will ever know exactly what was going through his mind, but it is hard to disagree with @MayorofLondon that Jason Arday faced “an unacceptable public hounding and campaign of abuse … pernicious public shaming that other people in his position wouldn’t have faced.” Whatever the truth of the allegations against him, would he have suffered such a hounding had he been white, with short hair? I doubt it. The zeal with which the Trumpian anti-DEI brigade in the U.K. leapt on this story to try to push back the wheel of progress towards genuine equality was horrible. Again, Sadiq is right to say “His death was a tragedy but it should be a wake-up call for all of us.” RIP Jason. And to all of us, if ever you think someone you know may have cause to be suicidal, reach out to them.

Having watched a total pillock throw his lit cigarette into a dry as dust hedge in the park this morning, frankly that #emergency #alert should be tattooed on some people foreheads.
