Brains (and RNNs) are noisy and it turns out this has mega implications for working memory🧠 Helping this project (my first in NeuroAI!) was a learning curve so I’m super grateful to @fatihdin4en and team for including me. Preprint: biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…
A computer holds data perfectly for hours. A person asked to remember a long number fails in seconds. Why? The answer is tangled up with something both brains and neural nets do: they code in low dimensions. 🧵

🧵 Thrilled to share our new paper, just out in @NatureComms! 🎉 BTSP is known to rapidly form place cellsin hippocampal CA1 via plateau potentials. Here, we found that BTSP isn't just for spatial maps. It works for non-spatial information too! 🧠⬇️ 📄doi.org/10.1038/s41467-026-7…

It is tricky to characterize the features represented by human language cortex. This work is a step toward doing so. Using small, interpretable feature sets, we explain language-network responses and show a shared feature basis across regions with variation across individuals.

L1 English speakers who were better at understanding the accent werebetter at detecting pitch differences, remembering sound patterns & attending to pitch. Musical training also helped. Better speech perception was also linked to stronger neural encoding of speech harmonics.🧵4/5

Together, these results suggest that the precision with which people perceive and remember sound patterns plays a major role in how well they understand accented speech, and that auditory training may help listeners who struggle. 🧵5/5
