Beyond AFRIDEX 2026… Romania’s defence industry plans to establish a military equipment manufacturing facility in Nigeria, following discussions with Nigeria’s Minister of Defence and military leadership at AFRIDEX 2026. The proposed investment is expected to deepen bilateral defence cooperation, strengthen local manufacturing and improve access to military equipment. The exhibition also highlights Nigeria’s growing indigenous defence production, with DICON D7G expanding its output of arms, ammunition and other military equipment. Alongside advances in maritime surveillance technology, these initiatives aim to strengthen national security, reduce reliance on imported defence equipment and create opportunities to supply wider African markets.

#ThisWeekinUSNigeriaHistory in 1980, the United States and Nigeria held trade talks in Washington following then-President Shehu Shagari’s official visit. The talks focused on expanding trade and investment, including U.S. agricultural exports, while supporting Nigeria’s agricultural development. More than four decades later, both countries continue to strengthen commercial ties in agriculture, infrastructure, the digital economy, and other sectors, creating economic opportunities for Americans and Nigerians. #Freedom250 Image credit: commons.wikimedia.org

I don’t argue with you because I used to be a conspiracy theorist like you as well. To be young and foolish. You’ll grow up and have a better understanding of the world someday. This Black or white mentality is a sign of an underdeveloped frontal lobe.

Nigeria gave major military and police aid to DRC in the early 1960s. From 1960-64 (including 1963) it sent five battalions plus ~400 police under ONUC, trained Congolese police, helped keep order, and spent over $40m. In 1963 Balewa offered to keep troops after any UN pullout. Nigeria remains a long-time UN peacekeeping contributor, with a small MONUSCO presence. In 2001 Obasanjo offered troops to MONUC if peace held.

Africa is stronger as a neutral player that keeps its own problems at the centre: insecurity, border control, climate pressure on the Sahel, and building local industry.

That position lets us benefit from both sides at once: China's manufacturing scale and infrastructure financing, and the technology, training and security partnerships of the US and its allies. Picking a side means inheriting someone else's rivalry.

Staying focused means every partnership has to serve African priorities first. The opportunities on this continent are endless, and AFRIDEX is proof. Defence leaders, engineers and companies from every corner of the world came to Lagos, and Africans are building here too.
