East Africa’s art market is reaching new heights.
A major auction at Circle Art Gallery in Nairobi generated more than $356,000, with strong bidding for artists from Tanzania, Sudan, Kenya, Uganda and Mozambique. Several works sold well above their estimates, including a painting by Edward Saidi Tingatinga that set a new world auction record for the Tanzanian artist.
With 90% of the 68 lots sold, the results point to growing collector interest and a strengthening secondary market for modern and contemporary East African art.

In an age dominated by technology, in which efficiency and profit often take precedence, it is so important that we continue to cultivate a spirit of contemplation and allow time and space for beauty. Such an attitude will greatly help humanity, especially young people, to discover the ability of art to uplift and reveal the depths of the human spirit and our openness to the divine. Contemplation presents a marvelous opportunity to encounter the God who is Beauty.
