Want to play D1 football? Watch the players at your position on Saturdays and take notes on the little things. Footwork, agility, moves, hands, hips, eyes, etc. Look at how those kids make incredible plays look easy. Go to college football games and watch them in person.

Hamilton has clinched the second place in the western league and should be higher than Venice. Venice and university play for third place this coming week, but all of them should be in D1.

Jesse Legree just announced he is staying at Oregon State through 2027.
The two men who run that program looked at him once before and passed.
JaMarcus Shephard and Eron Hodges were both on Alabama's staff in the fall of 2025. Legree was a 160 pound defensive back at Loyola Blakefield in Baltimore who had moved to receiver for his senior year, and moving cost him. Coaches saw an undersized defensive back. The programs with room at receiver had already filled it.
Pittsburgh looked. Temple thought about him at cornerback. A few FCS schools circled.
His high school coach at St. Frances Academy called the silence debilitating, and kept the Oregon State conversations quiet so the kid would not get his hopes up over nothing.
Then Shephard got the Oregon State job on the 28th of November in 2025. Hodges told him to go watch Legree immediately.
He became the first player they went after.
The scholarship offer came by text, late on Signing Day, while Legree was sitting in a film room.
Here is what he has said about the place he said yes to.
"I barely knew Oregon was a state."
On the sixth play of his first college game he caught one and ran 71 yards with it. The next week he put 240 yards and two touchdowns on Texas Tech.
He has been the Pac-12 freshman of the week seven straight times. He leads the entire country in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, as a true freshman, at 5 foot 10.
Chad Johnson offered $2 million of his own money to help the Beavers keep him.
He told ESPN's Pete Thamel.
Now the part that complicates it. He has played six games. Plenty of freshmen have had a season like this and never had another one, and nothing about today promises anybody a 2028. Eron Hodges said out loud a few weeks ago that keeping him was going to be hard.
Today it was not.
And there is one more thing, which is the part that stays with me.
Basketball was his first sport. He only picked up football to stay in shape for it, and he stopped growing at 5 foot 10. His older brother Josiah plays point guard at UTSA.
His dad Jeffrey coaches junior varsity girls basketball. He also works with the football program at St. Frances on mental health and player development.
So when Jesse Legree gets asked what he wants to do once the football is finished, he does not say coach, and he does not say television.
He says he wants to be a therapist. He says he wants to help people.
The kid nobody would take at receiver is now the best one in the country. And what he says he wants when it is over is to sit in a room and listen.

๐ RECRUITING TIP OF THE DAY
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2026
๐ A COLLEGE GAME DAY INVITATION IS AN OPPORTUNITY, NOT AN OFFER!
Prospects and parents, receiving an invitation to attend a college football game can be exciting. Walking onto campus, meeting coaches and experiencing the atmosphere can make an athlete feel like they're one step closer to playing college football.
But here's something every family needs to understand:
BEING INVITED TO CAMPUS DOESN'T AUTOMATICALLY MEAN YOU'RE BEING ACTIVELY RECRUITED!
There is a difference between attending a game, receiving recruiting interest and being a priority prospect on a college program's recruiting board.
๐ด FIVE THINGS EVERY PROSPECT SHOULD UNDERSTAND ABOUT COLLEGE VISITS
1๏ธโฃ KNOW WHAT TYPE OF VISIT YOU'RE ATTENDING.
An unofficial visit generally means the prospect or family pays their own expenses, subject to applicable NCAA rules.
An official visit may include certain expenses paid by the institution under the rules governing that program.
2๏ธโฃ ASK WHO EXTENDED THE INVITATION.
Was the invitation sent directly by a position coach or recruiting staff member?
Or was it a general invitation distributed to numerous high school athletes?
Both can provide value, but they don't necessarily represent the same level of recruiting interest.
3๏ธโฃ DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE ARRIVING.
Know the program's conference, coaching staff, academic offerings and current roster.
Research how many players are at your position and whether the program is recruiting athletes in your graduation class.
4๏ธโฃ MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR OPPORTUNITY.
If you have an opportunity to interact with the coaching staff, introduce yourself professionally.
Be prepared to discuss your academics, football development and interest in the program.
Don't assume every visit will include individual time with a coach.
5๏ธโฃ FOLLOW UP AFTER THE VISIT.
Send a professional thank-you message to your recruiting contact.
Ask whether the staff needs updated film, transcripts or additional information to continue evaluating you.
Remember that recruiting communication rules may affect when coaches can respond.
๐ฏ PARENTS, PAY ATTENTION!
Don't mistake access for genuine recruiting interest.
Your athlete attending five college games doesn't automatically mean five programs are actively recruiting them.
Pay attention to the conversations taking place and the next steps being communicated.
A PHOTO ON THE FIELD IS A MEMORY. A MEANINGFUL CONVERSATION WITH A COACH CAN BE PART OF BUILDING AN OPPORTUNITY.
๐ YOUR ASSIGNMENT THIS WEEK
If you've attended a college game this season, review the experience.
Ask yourself:
โ
Did I have direct communication with a member of the coaching staff?
โ
Does the program have a potential need at my position?
โ
Has anyone requested my film or academic information?
โ
Do I understand where I stand in their evaluation process?
โ
Have I followed up professionally?
Use those answers to determine your next steps.
๐ COACH D'S FINAL WORD
STOP MEASURING YOUR RECRUITMENT BY HOW MANY COLLEGE STADIUMS YOU'VE VISITED!
College visits should help you learn about programs, develop relationships and make informed decisions.
Enjoy the experience, but understand the business side of recruiting.
THE GOAL ISN'T JUST TO GET INVITED TO CAMPUS. THE GOAL IS TO EARN AN OPPORTUNITY TO BECOME PART OF THE PROGRAM!
