49 years ago today (October 26, 1977), Bugs Bunny’s Howl-oween Special* premiered on CBS. 📺📼🎃 This 30-minute Looney Tunes Halloween special is a classic late-’70s compilation: newly animated bridging sequences stitch together clips from nine theatrical shorts (1948–1966), with a focus on the four cartoons featuring June Foray’s Witch Hazel. Directed by David Detiege (with classic footage from Friz Freleng, Chuck Jones, Robert McKimson, and others) and executive-produced by Hal Geer, it stars Mel Blanc as Bugs, Daffy, Porky, Sylvester, Tweety, Speedy, and more, alongside Foray as Witch Hazel. The setup: On Halloween night, Bugs goes trick-or-treating disguised as a witch and ends up at Witch Hazel’s place. What follows is a chain of antics involving Daffy and his nephew, Speedy Gonzales, Sylvester & Porky in a haunted hotel, Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde transformations, and Hazel’s various schemes—culminating in Bugs using magic to turn the tables (and the witch into a bunny). It’s pure spooky-season Looney Tunes energy, even if the linking material is lighter than the classic shorts it draws from. Featured cartoons include: - A-Haunting We Will Go (1966) - Broom-Stick Bunny (1956) - Hyde and Hare (1955) - Hyde and Go Tweet (1960) - A Witch’s Tangled Hare (1959) - Claws for Alarm (1954) - Scaredy Cat (1948) - Transylvania 6-5000 (1963) - Bewitched Bunny (1954) It later showed up on VHS (1994), a 2010 DVD (with Hair-Raising Hare as a bonus), and the 2020 Looney Tunes: Holiday Triple Feature set. A perfect slice of 1970s CBS Halloween programming for monster kids and Looney Tunes fans alike.
