It's been two years since I was discharged from a nearly month-long hospitalization after a frightening and life-threatening medical scare brought a whole new meaning to spooky season. 🧵🎃🫁

“‘The number one issue has been health care – Medicaid expansion. That's the number one issue; that's the number two issue,’ [Rep. Hugely] said. ‘We have to get that done.’” 11alive.com/article/news/pol…

“Health care could also include abortion rights – which Republicans curtailed in 2019 by enacting a bill that effectively outlawed abortion after six weeks' gestation.”

Loving this books angle reporting on Scott Colom’s senate campaign
Scott Colom told reporters yesterday that his favorite book is Anna Karenina by Tolstoy. He also enjoys War and Peace, the Robert Caro books and Things Fall Apart. Probably his worst take is he doesn’t enjoy James Baldwin’s novels, but everyone’s allowed a few bad opinions.

If there's one shift that sums up 2026, it's Kansas's Golden Triangle of meatpacking (Liberal, Dodge City, Garden City, 61% Hispanic), focus of sweeping ICE operations in September: 2024: Trump 15,915 (68%), Harris 7,240 (31%) 2026: Marshall 9,537 (46%), Hamilton 10,411 (51%)

Medicaid expansion has re-entered the chat thanks to voters electing Democrats to governor’s offices and flipped some legislative chambers in GA, KS, TX, & WI. Republicans in these four states have intentionally blocked full Medicaid expansion. stateline.org/2026/11/06/dem…

These states are among the 10 that have yet to adopt full MedEx: AL, FL, MS, SC, TN, and WY are the remaining six. Also, this week voters in South Dakota rejected a ballot measure to add a trigger law to its MedEx program. SD voters approved its MedEx ballot measure in 2022.

Thank you @AnnieAndrewsMD for having the courage to stand up for science and for being one of the few elected officials willing to take action.
Senator-Elect Annie Andrews: I want to hold RFK Jr. accountable for the damage that he has done to America’s public health system. He is the reason that Spartanburg County, South Carolina had a measles outbreak just last year. He has done grave damage to trust in the public health system in America and he needs to be held accountable, and I think no one is better prepared to do that than me — a pediatrician with 20 years of experience practicing.

HHS is like a hijacked plane. Career scientists silenced by clout and money chasing operatives focused on retribution. AI bot-style CDC director smiling on the outside while being complicit in the demise of public health. We need guardrails to build a new public health—Congress can do that.

At 62%, CA-22 has the highest Medicaid enrollment of any GOP-held seat in the country. This was a big flip for Democrats. I imagine Villegas will be on the frontlines in the fight to reverse the Medicaid cuts. And he and other members should take big swings on health care.
👀Ravi Mangla, Working Families Party press sec, responds by citing Villegas’ win “A Central Valley district that went for Trump voted in a populist by one of the largest margins in the entire country. If that isn’t a mandate for bold economic change, I don’t know what is.”
