Models of Authority

Look what’s rocked up! ⁦@hannaballoo⁩ ⁦@boydellbrewer⁩

A "wow!” moment at #OTST22 when Georgi Parpulov tells us that he has identified a series of fragments which belong to the same codex — which just happens to be the oldest extant copy of the Gospels in Arabic (dated 873)! (Here are two of his slides that I’ve pieced together.)

“Go Ælfric!” — Even 10th/11th century Benedictine monks need a little encouragement ;-) (@CamDigLib, MS Hh.1.10, f. 1r: cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/view/MS-H…)

I know we’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover. But when the cover looks like this, well… my jaw dropped open when this came out the box! (@bodleianlibs MS Lyell 77: medieval.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/c…)

The best definition of The History of the Book is by @respektor: “This is how I feel right now Obsolete manuscript No one reads and no one needs Pages lost, incomplete No one knows what it means.”

Job alert! As an apparent tie-in to @amazon’s “Rings of Power”, @UniofOxford have resuscitated the "JRRR Tolkien Professorship", bringing it back from the dead like… well… Gandalf? Though hopefully non-Gandalfs can apply. Nice crossover Amazon & Oxford! jobs.ac.uk/job/CNI113/jrr-to…

The programme for "Opening the Sacred Text: Meaning, Materiality, Historiography” is now online. Yay! modelsofauthority.ac.uk/blog… @bodleianlibs #MedievalTwitter

Yay! My Black Friday purchase from @OxUniPress has arrived: @ETreharne’s *Perceptions of Medieval Manuscripts* — took me a couple of seconds to realise that “The phenomenal book” was a clever subtitle and not a reviewer’s comment 😎

Amazing to be teaching palaeography in person @bodleianlibs after 18 months of Zoom. & so good to facilitate students looking at manuscripts — we did well on-line, but History of the Book is SO MUCH BETTER when the students can handle the medieval books ;-) #BodPal #TheMagicians

That moment when your new piece of office furniture rocks up!! @bodleianlibs is the best!

Imagine my joy at Finding Nemo! (@BedesBooks DCA DCD Misc. Ch. 580) @modelsauthority

A near-constant cri de cœur has been “How do I cite the @modelsauthority database?”. Always one to pander to the adoring masses, I've written a small guide: modelsofauthority.ac.uk/abou… #outtacite

In that case, you get a special bonus image: @BedesBooks DCD Misc. Ch. 5957. It’s not available on the public @modelsauthority site, but we hope to add it soon. Or, to put it another way, "If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well/ It were done quickly:"

Don’t mention the “Scottish play”! @britishlibrary Add. Ch. 66568 modelsofauthority.ac.uk/digi…;

Are you ready to rock? Are you ready to roll? Then rock and roll #DH-style with @BillEndres, @HelsinHashtags and @frangelegetege in #s2205 "Bringing Texts back from the Dead, Sealing Practices, and Good Vibrations…”. Can I contain my excitement? Show up and find out! #IMC2021

Super psyched! Less than 45 mins until "Mass Digitisation of Medieval Manuscripts: How and Why? - A Round Table Discussion” with @AinonenT, @schassan, @suz_paul, @anjdunning, @MatthewHolford and… you! #s1402 #IMC2021 #PolonskyGerman #PolonskyGreek

It may be next to impossible to get a slot for the Manuscript Reading Room ⁦@britishlibrary⁩, but this is the next best thing. Excited much!

Now @thijsporck talks about his use of memes through lockdown: "One of the things I thought was okay, how am I going to make this fun and entertaining? I thought well, students like to make memes, why don’t I make memes as well!” #s421 #IMC2021
