I try my best to love the new order… am I not a model Winston Smith… but every week they throw something new at me
Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments: Liturgical extremism by "certain groups" provokes division and confusion through practices like kneeling for Holy Communion, wearing chapel veils.

I write this mainly because judging from on here you'd think that inevitably there's going to be a great Traddening very soon and I think this is some kind of delusive wishful thinking. The Vatican have set themselves up for some of these things for decades. They mean it!
Vatican to do list for the next 50 years: - remove the filioque from the creed - remove the tiara from emblems – more lay say in election of bishops - Amoris for contraception - deaconesses - more inter-communion with non-Catholics - more non-Catholic saints - common Easter date

Also at this point the atmosphere on this website is remarkably anti-intellectual, basically if you say things like "well the mitre makes more sense than the tiara because the pope is a bishop not an emperor" people don't argue back they just say 'you're a gay Novus Ordite' etc.

There's a reason "Socratic dialogue" and Plato generally were most prized by democratic Great Books-type educators and not in actual Christendom—because the movement of the dialogues is exactly from democratic laxity to God. But they're not edifying reading for young seminarians.

(These are my predictions, not my wishlist, although I do support some of them. Also, banning the old mass – they've already said they'll do that.)

Post-conciliar popes so far have come in two types: Fraternal: talks about joy and the devil, anti-traditionalist, conciliates Communists Paternal: concerned with sexual morality, anti-totalitarian, more teacherly Not entirely sure which Leo is, maybe a bit more fraternal

Every country goes through all the regimes, but some of them become truly themselves at a certain stage. America will become tyrannical, but not the tyrannical empire, because in its heart it truly believes in freedom and democracy.

Augustine interpreted Paul’s Damascus moment as a forcible conversion but that isn’t how it reads at all. Saul was so deep in darkness that when the light appeared it shocked and blinded him…

“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

A future pope (Benedict XII), when inquisitor, debated with an arrested apostate Jew (Baruch) for 2 months in 1320. I had thought this was the norm for the Inquisition but it turns out it was a rare exception. Christian practice has unfortunately not lived up to this philosophy…
In a materialistic/instrumentalist world view there is no room for persuasion, which assumes participation in some shared rationality, in a common Logos. Without it, those who have different ideas are like carriers of a virus in a pandemic and must be quarantined or destroyed.

If you read the polemics of that age you'd think true Catholicism was among the Jansenists, exactly as traditionalists talk now. You hear about the FSSP on here but never about the Communauté Saint-Martin.
Replying to @monkmanque
Jansenism, which was so similar, was also not an obscure niche movement. It stuck around for 200 years, influenced geniuses like Pascal, Beethoven, and Manzoni, and was supported by dozens of bishops. It still failed and was fully expelled from the church. commonwealmagazine.org/rival…

One thing I'm still processing is the difference between the fundamental story of good v evil I was raised with – LotR-Star Wars-HP: the scrappy band of rebels defeat the evil lord – and the fundamental equivalent in Christianity – proud Satan rebels against God's true authority.
I love saying the St. Michael Prayer after mass. My parish does it and I love it. With that being said, if my bishop banned it, I would submit. People need to learn submission. Catholicism is not about rebellion.

There's a lot of nuance here because the rebels in all those stories are always the remnants of some previous legitimate order fighting against an usurper. But I think the basic intuition of the two stories is rather different.

The Novus is basically the best possible liturgy the church can have right now. Because it's bound up with the chaplain-to-the-EU paradigm. And when the EU collapses Rome may well suffer physical attack.

Just as they stiffly maintained the Latin liturgy (hardly ideal for evangelization) for centuries because the Christian Roman empire was their main protection against invasion. Being an incarnate church means making tradeoffs.

Later Jansenism was a whole alternative Catholicism, with its own litany of saints (literally), ecclesiology, newspapers, seminaries, historical vision, expectation of future vindication, international network, families… and it all just disappeared after three centuries.
