Like her teacher Bloom, Paglia’s criticism is also about labelling everything, but her labelling is so bonkers that it has more charm. “James’s Decadent late style is the heavy ritual transvestism of a eunuch-priest of the mother goddess.” …Okay, sure!!
i don’t get Harold Bloom…marketed as this renegade defender of educated, impassioned interpretation, but then i read his books & the majority of them are very dull, with his only technique being comparison. “Crane was like Eliot and Stevens with Whitmanian aspiration.” booring!!

Elton John should have been called "Album" John. The fellow released 31 studio albums between 1969 and 2021

You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting. You only have to let that place that was circled with red paint be yellow. Keep every other thing exactly as it is. Thank you.
Wow we really are in hell

I don’t know why every time there’s a new product I have to “meet” it. I can’t imagine Hildegard Von Bingen ever dealt with this

When AIDS & its Metaphors came out, Sontag was annoyed that it was reviewed as a distinctly gay text rather than just as “writing”. I wonder if her insistence on form over content has to do with the fact that her content was often something she disavowed in herself, i.e., gayness

This doesn’t really match my experience. There aren’t many DFW guys anymore but that’s just because we have Cartarescu/Krasznahorkai/Lentz guys now
There was an entire culture of “literary men” as recently as the 2010s. Like there was a genre of hipster white guy who wouldn’t stop talking about David Foster Wallace. For some reason, the publishing industry got incredibly hostile to white guys and now literary culture doesn’t exist anymore. They thought they could take it away and have it for themselves, but all they could do was ruin it. They give Pulitzer Prizes and National Book Awards almost exclusively to books about race by black authors now, and nobody reads the books or pays any attention to the awards. Literature is dead and the big publishers are supported almost entirely by romance slop for white wine moms.

I honestly didn’t expect Larry David to come out firing like this:

Bethany wore a T-Shirt that said ‘Protect the Dolls’ during #Strictly rehearsals. After posting a video, the BBC quietly replaced it with a new one that doesn’t show her from the front. During the show, they actually blurred out the T-Shirt completely. Absolutely despicable

Stanley Cavell opens ‘Cities of Words’ with twenty epigraphs
Melville heads lets get together and start the eighty epigraph trend (it goes on for nine more pages and he eventually starts making them up)
