Not a macro trader but here's my vol trader attempt at a macro read/thought: Gulf money is a small portion of total AI buildout dollars, but hold massive importance under a measure that adjusts weighting to consider marginal benefit. By this I refer to QIX/MGX/PIF/etc. having served as a first-mover and stabilizing investor in several of the previous high-risk raises for OpenAI/xAI, paving the way for the more steady, risk-averse investment vehicles to participate. Unfortunately this means severe destabilization in the Middle East (such as boots on ground or using a freaking MOAB) could put these marginal dollars at risk and send some serious shockwaves through the apparatus, particularly if funds start to pull back commitments in future capital raises--at least, in expectation. It's interesting because typically higher oil prices should most immediately be connected with higher revenue for the Gulf funds; in this case, the impact may be large enough to disrupt the countries' businesses themselves (e.g. direct conflict with sovereigns, complete shipping closures, supply destruction, etc.). I expect we see a lot more 'situation monitoring' in the near term as it becomes more obvious how important this stuff has become again. The pricing of convexity/tails in crude, e.g., should be mandatory context for the pricing of volatility in equity options. If the geopolitical complex is pricing in a severe near-term tail, you should see a similar representation in equities in my view... given equity spot-vol corr, term structures, put skew, etc. it is very obvious that markets are in panic mode and that these recent moves are more than simple de-risking/rotation prior to earnings and midterms.

The very interesting thing is that in the beginning of the war, semis had a positive war beta and vols had positive spot vol correlation like oil. The thesis that those stocks were untouchable and a sure story. Now the correlation is gone. 🛢️📈📉

This post from Jeff is really important, but I fear those not versed in commodity trading parlance might need the English translation. What Jefff is saying is that until now, the smart money (pro oil traders who think about the whole term structure) were convinced, "this too shall pass". That's where the record backwardation came from - they all thought it would blow the price of the "front month" to the moon, but within a few months it would be over. Now, despite the escalations on the military front, backwardation is starting to fade as the back of the curve (what the smart money is willing to pay to lock in delivery of oil *next year* is "panciking along with the dumb money". If that's still too technical, Jeff just said "shit just got real".
The macro repricing of energy is now underway. Check out today's move in long dated oil - that's calendar 2027 WTI. When long dated oil moves this strongly in tandem with energy equities making new ATHs, financial markets need to listen. This is not a transient spike in prompt oil. It's far more structural. Get long, buckle your seat belt, and hang on for the ride.

👇🏻 interesting take @goodalexander !
alright so I tried to figure out why things are blowing up simple summary: it's geopolitics. and if the Middle East gets bad enough, then the backers for OpenAI's $1.4T funding round could pull out so that's sending shockwaves through markets bc they're the big data center tenant ppl are worried about. the incremental appears to be that Ukraine is also getting unhinged there's not an AI specific catalyst this seems more like geopolitics. Last night TSM guided acceleration and Citi pressed if there was demand destruction on memory - TSM said no, that's already factored into the guide which means there's not some specific Korea fundamental thing -- and price action there is likely more of a margin call Ukraine bonds have dumped 20% since July. He just asked for $70b Euros from the EU while Trump denied shutting off Starlink (Elon had said it wasn't him, so it just looks like a sht show). Trump told Zelensky to stop attacking Russian refineries. Zelensky has since crashed out and said "The block is out, we're done". And is now vowing to hit Russian refineries. And it appears he's already followed through hitting a facility in Surgut with drones Indonesia got delisted from the MSCI and the entire country equity index is -14% in a day, increasing the likelihood of EM contagion Iran has moved their nuclear facilities under ground in PickAxe mountain and trump has talked about using the "MOAB" which stands for Massive Ordnance Air Blast - which is just shy of a nuclear blast. THis is a 21,600 pound bomb that isn't even particularly effective at hitting underground sites so might just be generically destructive. For some reason Trump thinks that doing this after mid terms is fine - but oil is already pumping reports from Israel meanwhile: Israel now deploying mobile bomb shelters in major cities, with 2 reportedly spotted in Ashdod and Tel Aviv within 24hs, as IDF raises its alert level to highest across all fronts amid preparations for a possible strike on Iran fun times

David!!!!! @EconstratPB congratulations!
The September CPI and PPI translate into a core PCE projection of around 0.34%, which would be the highest monthly reading since January. That would push the 12-month change to 3.1% (from 3% in August) and the 3-month annualized rate to 2.9% (from 2.0%).

Yesterday evening I had the pleasure of attending an interesting event hosted by @sfcompute and @jumptrading focused on the compute space. Some brief takeaways: - There's an increasing understanding that greater liquidity in compute markets requires the construction of unifying benchmark indices, so that bespoke/OTC markets can be priced/quoted as a diff to a shared set of benchmarks, similar to what exists in the energy complex already (think crude grades and power). Part of the discussion is whether this will organically emerge if more traditional players (Citadel, Jump, blue-chip banks) expand their OTC offering for bilateral hedges (using their own prices), or require an independent party (S&P, CME, etc.) to validate and give credence for broader adoption. - Massive growth in the compute space is largely underpinned by structured financing trades with hedging mandates (similar to what you see in the oil and gas space). If someone with a sizable balance sheet just lent you a lot of money, who's likely to give you more aggressive pricing than their sales and trading arm? - Funding from life insurers has been a key part of the data center buildout (you could call it duration matching), with an increasing number of insurers considering hedging compute. Some of this exposure sits in mortgage books, while the biggest bucket is via corporate bonds ($ORCL, $MSFT, $META, and $GOOG comprise nearly 80% of Athene's IG software debt). - Quite a few folks seem offered over on the backend of the curve, largely driven by: * Concerns that distressed sellers could flood the market if the AI growth story slows down (as there's a lot of GPU-backed debt to unwind) * Natural hedgers are mostly sellers, as operators need contracted revenue to borrow, so they sell further out on the curve; buyers mostly lock in near-term rates w/ marginal demand coming from a handful of labs whose spending is contingent on their ability to still tap into financing * Software improvements are reducing GPU-hour needs, all the while new chips are depreciating the value of old hardware per unit of compute: $NVDA is releasing a new gen roughly every year (Blackwell Ultra, Rubin, and Rubin Ultra). That said, it does look like old chips are staying useful longer than most depreciation models assume, since inference and smaller models still allow sufficient monetization of older hardware. It'll be quite exciting to see how the space continues to mature, especially as new marketplaces begin to emerge for financially and physically settled compute. Huge thanks to @affaan and team for organizing!

While Musk owns SpaceX which controls Starlink systems and can impose restrictions on them in Ukraine, those that began overnight are on the Starshield military version of the system controlled by the Pentagon. This suggests the decision to limit the speed of the Starshield systems was made within the Trump administration. ft.com/content/37085602-726a…

I did not have on my bingo card that I would be so invested in Kelly Clarkson’s shopping escapades.
I am so glad Kelly just responded again. I could tell a million miles away that that store’s statement was bullshit. She’s not an idiot. If they said the bird wasn’t for sale, she would be fine with that. I’m glad she’s not letting their lies slide.
