India’s resilience comes under severe pressure from #Brent at higher end of big-picture $65-120, holding firm at upper half $90-120 which pushed USD/INR from 94-94.35 to 95.15-95.50!
Derive comfort from #Nift50 managing hold above the (recent) 2026 low 22179 and 10Y yield attracts interest at 7.50% post significant value correction from 6.15-6.65% to 7.35-7.50% in 2025-2026!
Wish & pray that Brent doesn’t extend bounce back into $120-150 to make hell break loose!
It’s nervous out there in the market place, hence avoid playing big either way and await clarity on the way forward!
It’s good comfort that banks have delivered strong Q2/FY27 earnings and presume have kept buffers to cover Q3 impact from rising bond yields & cost of funds!
USD/INR price stability at 94/94.35-95.15/95.50 is no surprise against abnormally elevated 1-3M FX yield curve at 10%+ despite worry from ineffective intervention through huge amount of $ sales by RBI & $ demand squeeze from administrative measures.
It’s also no surprise that debt & equity markets stay cautiously nervous despite #Nifty at 2025-2026 low (21743-22179) after losing ~15% from 2026 ATH of 26373. Worse from not seeing enough appetite on long term Gilts when 10Y yield at 7.35-7.50% adjusting the value by 12-20% from 2025-2026 low of 6.16-6.68%!
See investors in nervous mode from deterioration in m2m valuation of the portfolio & resultant capital erosion! Don’t see many having the capacity & appetite to hold & buy and worse on those that hold leveraged portfolio that would warrant cash top-up to avoid forced-unwind trigger!
It gets worse in SoH that’s pushing Brent Crude price upwards at $110-120! Unfortunately, can’t throw in the towel; need to do something or other to stay safe!
USD/INR first target 94-94.35 got hit with great efforts from combination of spending $75B of FC reserves & keeping 1M FX yield high at >10%: finally understood that interest rate is the best tool to arrest Rupee weakness when “powers that be” don’t have control over the headwinds from external dynamics and domestic cues retain buoyancy on growth momentum!
There’s no comfort or complacency at this stage when Brent Crude continues to remain sticky at $100-120!
Will FPIs get back seeing bond yields at 52 week high & #Nifty index at 52 week low and Rupee recovery to lower end of comfort zone 94-97 or will await further pull back to 90-91 and better value on debt & equity assets when bounce back recovery is muted when visibility on optimism is low!
When USD Index DXY fell from 110 to 95 (by ~13.5%) USD/INR rallied from 84 to 97 (by ~15.5%) and on DXY recovery from 95 to 103 (by ~8.5%) USD/INR into back & forth mode at 94-97, thanks only to spending >$75B of hard earned FC reserves (preventing run away beyond 100)!
It’s obvious from the above that there’s serious concerns over macroeconomic fundamentals & issues over asset valuation (adjusted for tax & currency depreciation)!
That would need retaining hawkish monetary policy stance till end of FY27 if not beyond (if Brent stays sticky >$100 and FPIs continue to stay aside seeking better entry value)!
What should have been done in H2/2025 is being done in H2/2026; hope it gets better from hereon!
It’s getting volatile (mood swings) on domestic liquidity!
Only the other day (term) VRRR was in operation to suck out 7-10T of excess liquidity and now VRR is triggered to infuse liquidity!
Stability factor has gone for a toss across everything!
See this as one-off (aberration) and expect normalcy (and stability) be restored sooner than later!
It’s (face-saving) relief to see USD/INR pushback into 94-95.50 notwithstanding the efforts taken to achieve this after raising $125B of leverage funds from foreign banks that highlighted the immense (credit risk) confidence on India & its banking sector!
Price-stability on Rupee helps to remove bearish undertone on debt & equity capital markets evidenced from 10Y yield stability ~7.35% (after the spike from ~6.65%) and #nifty recovering from new 2026 low 22179 (of 8th October)!
Below 94-94.35 would remove the fear & greed factors of importers & exporters respectively and to restore confidence for FPIs to make things better on financial markets.
If Rupee price stability factor is given priority over others, Goldilocks moment can be restored from interest rate stability, which is a costly lesson for @RBI and @FinMinIndia
It’s ridiculous to see 1M FX yield ~11.5% from spiking FX premium to ~7.5% and 1Y FX yield up at ~8.5% translating to yield curve of 11.5-8.5% across 1-12M as against the corresponding 1-12M MM yield curve of 6-6.35% building an arbitrage of 5.5-2.15%!
This kind of inefficiency between FX & MM yield curve (not seen for many years) will squeeze funds available for borrowers as banks will make better NII by parking money in the nostro accounts (export of domestic capital)!
Foreign banks pumped USD to domestic banks (for leverage funding against 3-5Y FCNR deposits) which now goes back to them (parked in the nostro accounts of domestic banks).
This should ideally trigger the next round of rate hike with a larger dose before 4th December, the next policy action date.
Unfortunately @RBI can’t do B/S swaps when Rupee is already flushed in the system!
Bad scene, but it’s good to keep USD/INR below 95.50 (at the cost of rising 3-12M borrowing cost for Indian borrowers)!
The worst impact is on the importer borrower, getting hit from both sides; paying high premium to hedge imports & paying more for short term rupee funds!
When financial stability goes for a toss, how can price stability be achieved across asset classes?
Relief to see trend down momentum in USD/INR at 94-95.50 thanks to combination of rising FX premium, RBI absorbing $ demand from big-3 PSU OMCs and curbing large ticket forward purchases of dollars by those holding unhedged FC liabilities.
Seeing drift down of 12M $ into comfort zone 97.50-100, exporters may rush in to cover future $ receivables when FX premium is abnormal & inefficient setting up the arbitrage play for those sitting on huge INR liquidity.
10Y bond spike into 7.35-7.50% is as per script but it’s a sharp turnaround from 6.65-6.75-%. It’s a not a bad entry for those who ran short-duration portfolio seeing interest rates & inflation spiking up!?
It’s no surprise to see #nifty finding support around 2026 low 22182 (after punching a new low at 22179) and likely to get into consolidation mode from intra-2026 value erosion of ~17%. Will FPIs see fairness in equity value when Rupee is down by >10%?
Domestic investors who have been buying all through from 2026 high 26373 (providing exit to FPIs) will find current levels good for improving the average value of the portfolio while waiting for the bounce back in 2027; till then it could end up as a dead cat bounce, hence caution!
Another mystery is from “free run” on leverage; most banks providing over 1:10 leverage with 0.75-1.0% spread between deposit rate (at >6%) and loan rate (at <5.5%); either RBI should have fixed a cap at 5X or bank’s board should have fixed a tolerance limit aligned to absorbing capacity of excess liquidity & management of liquidity till deployed profitability!
It ended up as mad rush (as if there’s no tomorrow!); banks chasing NRIs and NRIs chasing domestic banks & offshore leverage providers!
A costly lesson for the future!
The mindset of stakeholders in financial markets get driven by fear and/or greed; fear of missing out or greed from holding it for long!
This time, will importers rush to turn risk-off absorbing the “forced correction” in USD/INR from 96.65-97.35 towards 91-94 by hedging FC liabilities and exporters unwind cover to absorb the windfall gains (12M $ correction from >100 to <97) keeping the exposure open?
The above shouldn’t happen to establish medium term (2026-2027) price stability in USD/INR at 91-97 (12M $ at 94-100)!
It’s not easy when there is zero visibility on what’s in store from US-Iran: elevated Brent Crude at >$100 and continuing net negative FPI flows will keep the sentiment vulnerable; when in dark, stay hedged!
Glad that there is post-policy stability in USD/INR at 96.65-97.35 (pushing 12M $ focus above 100) and 10Y yield in comfort mode at no-man’s zone 7.15-7.35% while #nifty in nervous mode touch above 2026 low 22182 (retaining pull bias towards 2025 low 21743 ahead of 2024 low 21137).
The directional bias on debt & equity capital markets is highly dependent on the behavior of USD/INR (extended weakness in Rupee towards 100 or recovery towards 94)!
So, generating buy-on-dips urge for investors (keeping sentiment between risk-on & neutral) is with @RBI : to let the Rupee finds its own floor around 100 (till the next rate hike kicks in) or bulldoze USD/INR down into 94-95.50 (instead of building tolerance at 95.50-97) before MPC of December! Letting USD/INR into 97-98.50/100 is the major risk in play on asset markets!
Given the criticality on trade deficit and FPI flows, there’s no option but to keep Rupee value weak (whether or not it is over & under valued) to support exports (reduce non-essential imports) and to attract (debt & equity) capital inflows till external dynamics turn supportive to BoP!
It’s not a gloom & doom story and the ray of hope rests with keeping monetary policy stance between “calibrated tightening” & “hawkish” till normalcy is restored in the system!
@RBI had 2 options:
1. 50 bps hike + neutral stance
2. Pause + hawkish stance
The first option would have pushed back USD/INR to 95-96.50 while the second option would have pushed Rupee down further towards 98.50-100!
MPC discovered the 3rd option : 25 bps hike + calibrated tightening, which is neither here nor there resulting in USD/INR stability at 96.50-97.50 (aided by $ sales from RBI). While the policy statement ruled out rate cuts in the near term (aligned to the stance), waiting for another 2 months for the next (baby steps) 25 bps hike didn’t turn up as “cheers” to the stakeholders in general & Rupee bulls in particular! “Is the baby-step approach prudent when dynamics turn disruptive” is the debate?
What about banking stocks? Bank Nifty has outperformed Nifty significantly staying far away from 2026 low 49954 and losing ~7.5% in 2026 against 2025 close 59581. While the hold around midpoint of 2026 low & high provides comfort, the worry is from the m2m impact on HFT/AFS book and squeezing margin on HTM book from rising funding cost.
All taken, rest of 2026 will neither be bullish nor bearish while retaining the marginal drift down mode awaiting what Trump is up to (in SoH) post the midterm elections in the US! Will he send the Brent Crude crashing down to $65-80 or create havoc taking the focus beyond $115?
It’s very low probability of seeing USD/INR above 98.50-100 and 10Y yield above 7.35-7.50%; both combined should extend support for Nifty index at lows of 2024-2025 (21137-21743)!
It’s turbulence weather; keep the seat belt fastened at all times till soft landing!
RBI policy: 25 bps hike with calibrated tightening stance to avoid front-loaded 50 bps hike! Not an unpleasant shocker, thankfully!
When external dynamics far outweigh domestic fundamentals that are not in the control of @RBI or @FinMinIndia, the rate cut cycle has to be moderate while the rate hike cycle needs to be aggressive; it’s other way around since start of 2025!
Rate cut off the radar for rest of FY27 and trigger on more rate hikes ahead!
Attention continue to be on the Rupee exchange rate and Brent Crude behavior among many others!
Rupee weakness from 85-87 to 95-97 (against USD) since mid 2025 was largely attributed to over $50B of pullout by FPIs from concerns around “over valuation” of India debt & equity assets compared to peer economies.
Now that #Nifty is down from ATH to the lows of 2026 to mid 2025 and bond yields have risen sharply (10Y from <6.20% to >7.20%), will Rupee get saved by FPI’s come back?
Or wait till India-US 10Y yield spread moves over 2% and pushback in USD/INR into/below 93-95?
Will @RBI response tomorrow be adequate lifting the LAF corridor from 5-5.5% to 5.5-6.0% (versus current FED Fund rate of 3.75-4.0% & rising)?
Kudos to domestic investors who have been “buying on dips” all through this free fall in 2026 and haven’t panicked as yet!
All eyes on RBI to provide the desired comfort to retail investor community to stay put & keep buying till FPI’s get back with fire momentum!
If domestic investors lose interest, then parastatal investors need to be pulled in to arrest collapse to avoid hard landing in 2026/FY27!
The spike in India 10Y yield from 6.65-6.70% to 7.10-7.15% is as per script adjusting for 25-50 bps rate hike on 7th October. This also emerge as headwinds while USD/INR looks firm at 95.50-96.65/97.0 keeping 12M $ play at 98.50-100!
Excess system liquidity moving into VRRR is a near term irritant but set to get resolved soon when banks open up the lending tap (to quickly stop the negative carry from FCNR deposits at 6-7%)!
The only disappointment is from seeing USD/INR at 95.50-97.0 (instead of 90-93) despite getting USD 150B of dollars in quick time!
12M USD/INR is racing towards psychological 100 from combination of higher spot (into 95.50-96.65) & rising FX premium (over 3.25%, up 1% from the low)!
While Brent Crude spike over $100 is the major factor, Rupee not benefiting from rising interest rates is a concern from FPIs getting nervous to hold India debt & equity assets, when markets have started factoring hikes in policy rates & losing the Goldilocks comfort.
Good that @RBI has enough stockpile of USD to defend Rupee at 96.65-97.0 not allowing 12M $ to sustain above 100!
