If you're an OO programmer, try immersing yourself in a functional programming language full time for a year. When you come back to your OOP language, prepare to be surprised how much unnecessary complexity and opaqueness it carries.

Every day, I hear software developers choose cryptic language when plain language could be used. For example, using an acronym when saying the words is just as easy, or never defining uncommon terms. Does this come from a desire to sound smart?

Passing tests may feel good-- and they're important-- but I'm reminded every day that tests are no substitute for thorough reasoning of my code.

Dynamically typed language - variables do not have types; only values do.
It's easy to write passing tests around defective code. Tests are no substitute for rigorous, ad hoc code analysis.
