James Earl Jones was paid $7,000 to be the voice of Darth Vader. It took him two and a half hours. He asked them to leave his name off the credits. 1976. George Lucas has finished filming Star Wars. The man inside the Vader suit, David Prowse, speaks with a West Country accent. Lucas wants a darker voice. He thinks about Orson Welles. Too recognizable. So he calls a stage actor from Mississippi who stuttered so badly as a boy that he barely spoke for years. Jones walks in, records every line in an afternoon, and goes home with $7,000. He thought it was good money. Years later he said: "I lucked out." On the same film, Alec Guinness got 2.25% of the profits. Jones turned down screen credit. Prowse was the one in the suit. Jones called himself "special effects." His name didn't appear until Return of the Jedi in 1983. Star Wars made over $300 million in its first run. Vader's mask ended up on lunchboxes, helmets and toys for the next 45 years. In 2022, at 91, he signed off on letting Lucasfilm recreate his voice with AI. Vader could keep talking without him.
