𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗜 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝘀 On 27th October 2026, Anuar Said, TMC’s Technology and Capacity Building Lead, facilitated a practical lab on Testing AI Tools for Newsrooms during the AI Governance for Media Houses: Developing Policies for Responsible Newsroom Use Workshop in Dar es Salaam. The practical engagement provided participants with an opportunity to explore and test AI tools, examine their applications in media production, and understand how emerging technologies can support newsroom workflows. Through hands-on learning, participants explored opportunities for integrating AI into journalistic work while considering the importance of responsible use, accuracy, and editorial oversight. The practical lab contributed to strengthening media professionals' capacity to adopt AI tools effectively while maintaining journalistic standards and editorial responsibility. 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗣 𝗙𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 | 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗜 𝗨𝘀𝗲 On 28th October 2026, Dastan Kamanzi, Executive Director of Tanzania Media Foundation (TMF), facilitated a session on Technical Safeguards for Responsible AI Use during the AI Governance for Media Houses: Developing Policies for Responsible Newsroom Use Workshop in Dar es Salaam. The session explored the technical considerations and safeguards necessary for the responsible integration of artificial intelligence into newsroom operations, highlighting the importance of managing potential risks while harnessing the opportunities presented by emerging technologies. Participants engaged in discussions on strengthening technical approaches to AI adoption, recognising the role of appropriate safeguards in promoting responsible, secure, and accountable use of AI within media organisations. The engagement contributed to the workshop's broader objective of equipping media houses with the knowledge and practical considerations needed to develop effective AI governance policies and strengthen responsible AI adoption in journalism. 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲: 𝗟𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 & 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 On 30th October 2026, TMC convened an FGD at its headquarters to examine Tanzania’s 2026 Online Content Amendments and their implications for small digital publishers. The discussion explored the licensing requirements facing independent bloggers, community publishers, and citizen journalists, including concerns around the 12-month limit for Category C licences and the requirement to transition to commercial licensing. Participants also considered how registration requirements, including identity verification, may affect privacy and the ability of public-interest publishers to operate safely. The conversation focused on proportionality, freedom of expression, and the potential impact of criminal penalties for licensing violations. Participants examined the need for safeguards that distinguish genuine public-interest concerns from lawful expression and help prevent arbitrary restrictions on digital content. The dialogue brought stakeholders together to consider barriers facing small publishers and discuss policy options, including a fee-exempt notification approach for non-commercial publishers. The recommendations will inform TMC Policy Brief Issue 13 and a technical memorandum of proposed amendments for the Ministry of Information, Communication and Information Technology.
