“My voice was heard many years before this project.” For Omara Portuondo, Buena Vista Social Club was one chapter in a lifetime of music. Beginning her professional career at 18, she helped form Cuarteto de Aída and spent decades recording and performing around the world.

Death Be Not Proud. Today, you have touched the very core of Africa’s creative nerve. Before it was en vogue to be proudly African, Maria was already carrying the flag with grace, conviction and unapologetic pride. Before African stories found global stages, she was the trusted communicator to shape our narratives with dignity and depth. Before the creative community gathered in fashionable spaces and celebrated itself with confidence, she was the convenor who brought people together, opening doors, connecting generations and reminding us that creativity is also community. Everyone has a memorable Maria story or anecdote: Their first pair of proudly African shoes, bag or accessory. Their story authentically told. A door she opened for them. A hug, smile or good word that made their day. Everyone has an indelible memory of her character: Selfless. Connector. Community Builder. Cultural Shaper. Generous. Kind. A quiet but formidable force who made others feel seen long before the world saw them. Maria did not simply work in the creative industry; she helped give it soul, language and belonging. So many careers, collaborations, friendships and movements across the continent carry her fingerprints. And perhaps that is why this loss feels so profound. It is not only the passing of a person, but of a presence that was warm, generous, elegant and deeply African. But as the poet reminds us in Death Be Not Proud: “Death, thou shalt die.” Because spirits like Maria's do not disappear. They echo in the stories we tell, the communities we build, and the Africa she believed in before many of us knew how to believe in it ourselves. Rest well, Maria McCloy. Africa is better because you passed through it. Thank you for gift of life and contributions to the African creative community. With your passing, this is not a Happy Africa Month.

You wrote the very first article published about us. Thank you for being a day 1 believer and a foundation stone that shaped the “New South Africa’s” youth culture. Rest now Maria McCloy. You race is run. Thank you for time and we’ll see you out there 🙏🏾

If you don’t like this, then you are clearly not their target market. From an ‘old-fashioned English brand’ to a youthful, culturally diverse and vibrant look, with a whole load of Asian flair. I won’t lie, i love it! ♥️👏

The best investment in Germany is a kitchen. If you rent, there might not be one. If there is, you might have to negotiate with previous tenants to buy thiers. No matter how crap it is, previous tenants almost always want full price. German kitchens retain value like a Rolex.

This evening I’m transiting through Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport on my way to East Africa. And this is how the expanded and renovated terminal looks. I appreciate that things are not picture-perfect in Zimbabwe ✈️🇿🇼 but this is a good showing. Impressive 🌍🙌

I really think SARS could have let people access the Savings Pot and taxing it as retirement funds, with all the tax benefits. People need the money AND they need to save for retirement. Why tax them like it's a punishment to take their own money 😫
