I'm not paying $8/mo for Twitter, so before my account slowly sinks below the tides, never to be heard from again, consider following me on Mastodon
recurse.social/@mqbs
I also set up an account on cohost — cohost.org/mqbs
or you can forget about me for a few months until suddenly you wonder what I'm up to, and send me an email or a text asking what's up, that's cool too
So happy to have worked on this project with @winclimate!
🚨Big announcement!🚨
Today we presented a report to legislators on how much new single-family homes would save under the All-Electric Building Act that's being considered in New York State 👇

Watching this video of @pde33 eulogizing Aaron Swartz, and thought I'd share for anyone who feels the need to hear him speak: youtube.com/watch?v=ztMGZlE_… Please send any other videos or content by Peter you recommend reading/watching/revisiting.

Peter was a member of what I call the Class of 1993 -- the hackers who came of age as the first web browsers created the modern Internet. We found each other in those early online spaces, and built out this new digital world together. We never lost the optimism or the work ethic.
Missing Peter Eckersley terribly, an outstanding human and an even better friend. I expect many of us will continue to have a small simulation of him running in our heads for the rest of our lives.
The only consolation has been to see such an amazing outpouring of love from so many others whose lives he also touched, and to get to grieve with some of them in person.

Today, I, along with a team I spent over 6 years helping to build, mentor, and lead got phased out & laid off. It’s a gut punch. But it was a gift getting to work with a group of kind, smart, and motivated Data Scientists for so long. I’m incredibly of proud of the work we did.

The @60Minutes interview with @FrancesHaugen_ is just absolutely brutal.
Incredible fortitude for her to so scrupulously leak this research.
Let’s hope she becomes a model for all data scientists: rigorous, brilliant and relentlessly principled.

“Facebook has realized that if they change the algorithm to be safer, people will spend less time on the site, they'll click on less ads, they'll make less money,” says Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen. cbsn.ws/3ouorZb

Mythbusters but for rich people who think they work harder than the poor and that's the only reason disparity exists.

This. In my anthro/bio work, the debates and confusion are about new things. In my stats work, the debates are about wtf probability means. Stats is like an inverted field, in which everyone uses linear regression but no one agrees what it means.
It blows my mind (in a good way!) that we're just getting our heads around something as basic as what cross validation really means.
Reminds me of one of my favorite University of Chicago t-shirts: "That's all well and good in practice... but how does it work in theory?"
